This album is so good. It shows Ec playing some stupendous blues, ripping through some Cream tracks, has the better tracks of his output at that time and some excellent playing alongside an orchestra. I've rarely heard EC play the guitar as well as on this album, it is breathtaking at times. One of my favourites of his live work.

I first heard this album when my older brother would play it over and over until I hated it. When it got re-released with extra songs, I found a new liking for it. There were the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and even Eric Clapton (Cream era), but there really was only one true solo guitar artist of this time. Jimi Hendrix just explodes on every track with hard core `rock and roll' ("Fire") or strong R & B ("Hey Joe"), but his classic FM songs were "Manic Depression" and "Purple Haze", the latter having one of the most replicated riffs in history outside of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven". Little mention was made in the sixties of his drummer Mitch Mitchell or his bassist Noel Redding, but here with this Remastered recording, you hear the sound ... Read More:

Not that there was anything much lacking with the original transfer to CD (except for the accompanying 1980 album Stage Struck, which was just a head-banging row by comparison) but now, digitally remastered, this is better than ever. I've still not heard any Taste, his original three piece band, but the minimalist three piece format was maintained for this and was, in my view, never bettered. 1974's Irish Tour would have been better without the addition of Rod De'Ath on keyboards.

Anyway, whilst Side 1 is competent and energetic, the album really comes to life on Side 2, featuring his two all time classics, namely Going to My Home Town and In Your Town. In fact, the album's almost worth having just for those two alone. The DR issue adds ... Read More:

I really wanted to like this album. Two icons of R&B getting together again to cover some classic tracks. Unfortunately, this album is anaesthetic, tame and bland. Maybe 4 out of the 12 tracks are worth listening to. Clapton mumbles away in the background and spoils perfectly good music with muffled vocals and most of the track choice is at best uninspired.

Probably the notable exception is "Key to the Highway", which, along with "Riding with the King" is among the few highlights of this album. The musicianship is brilliant but it's so TAME!

What this pair need to to is get up on stage with George Thorogood and hammer it out instead of sitting in their rocking chairs telling everyone what fine guitarists they are while they pluck ... Read More:

The 'BBC sessions' are a good place to go to hear lots of short live examples of Jimi's early music. I wouldn't say it's the best place to go for a live experience, for that I'd suggest 'Live at Berkley', but it does have some great playing and a good feel when Jimi was just starting out and was fresh. There are a lot of repeat tracks on this double album and not many extended Jams which he was carried off so well live, but there is a good selection of his music here (although it is mainly from his first two albums). The jingle he wrote for Radio 1 is excellent and the various spoken word introductions are good at recreating the feel of the time, very cheesy and very sixties. As usual with experience Hendrix releases there is a comprehensive booklet with ... Read More:

Quite simply a guitar genius at work. If the guitar is your instrument and you like the blues you will surely love this album. Quite outstanding.

I've had this album for a long time, and recently revisited it, which included checking out some of the videos to be found on YouTube. I have to say there is some great stuff to be found here. As a long time fan of both Whitesnake and Led Zeppelin, it does seem as if DC and JP managed to combine their powers to good effect, even if that means ripping yourself off (see the lick for "Shake My Tree" and compare it to "Nobody's Fault But Mine"!). Page produces some superb stuff here, his best since Led Zep "Presence", particularly the solo on "Take Me For A Little While" and the riff to "Absolution Blues".

Another reviewer mentioned this album being a guilty pleasure, and I think that's spot on. If I have a reservation, it is that Coverdale spends a lot of ... Read More:

This is generally accepted as one of the top 500 albums of all time. Listen to it and find out why. Not only that, but the live album captures the band at it best.

I feel that this is an incomplete album as it was assembled posthumously, but as a Hendrix fan it is essential as it gives an insight into the direction Jimi might have taken his next album.
I would never recommend this as an introduction to Hendrix, but there are still tracks that are hugely enjoyable here. The opener,Freedom,is almost like an electric big band swing style track with Jimis guitar driving the whole track along. If he were alive he would be opening his Vegas residency set with this track along with Celene Dion on backing vocals.
Other tracks sound like they still needed some work like Izabella and Room Full Of Mirrors, but the album is still the next best thing to a new Hendrix release.
Only 4 stars cos its compiled, but for me personally the man can do ... Read More:
