This was Eric's first live album after his 1970s `comeback' and it's one of his best live efforts, up there with Just One Night and the Dominos at Fillmore.

After the relatively low-key guitar work on 461 Ocean Blvd and There's One in Every Crowd, this set has some cracking guitar, not only from EC but also from George Terry. The rhythm section is solid and Yvonne Elliman's back up vocals fit in well, particularly on 'Can't Find My Way Home'.

The remastered CD sound is superior to the old LP, plus it has the full version of the acoustic Driftin' Blues. The drum sound is crisp and much better than on, for example, Just One Night.

The album opens with a great version of Have You Ever Loved a Woman - complete ... Read More:

An excellent live set recorded in Tokyo in December `79, and very wise of Mr C to have taken along a second guitarist (the redoubtable Albert Lee) to fill things out. For many years, I wasn't too bothered about getting it on CD, but once I finally took the plunge and bought the DR edition it's come up better than ever. The only track I don't like is the rather soppy Wonderful Tonight, though this is amply compensated for by numbers such as Worried Life Blues, Cocaine and Further On Up The Road. Great stuff.

Music : Live At Woodstock
I grew up in the Woodstock era and was actually stationed in nearby West Point after my Viet Nam tour. So this collection or documentary "The Road to Woodstock" directed by Bob Smeaton also holds a piece of me history.

I must say I almost did not watch this film as the front have was a packed with sound bites of people doing just what I did in the first paragraph of this review; they spent too much time telling how great they were and then some antidote about Jimi.

Hang in there you will be carried away. This is as close to live as you are going to get. Jimi is one of those performers that when let lose can perform rings around his formal recordings. Some times I think it is an acquired taste. I have to confess besides his adaptation of ... Read More:

'Pilgrim' is definitely an album that grows on you and takes repeated listening before you really enjoy what it has to offer. The actual music and songs are pretty good and there are some real gems hidden on this album. The problem is Simon Climie's terrible production. Never have I heard such flat, uninspiring rendering of any artists work, especially Clapton. Unfortunately Climie continues to produce for Clapton, which is a real shame. Choosing a friend to produce your work is one thing, but production like this is unforgivable. Never the less this album has some great blues and a wonderfully melancholic feel to it, perfect for late night listening sessions or down beat moments. I do recommend this album, but try to look past the dire production and flat sound.

This is, of course, a biased opinion. I first went to see Rory Gallagher live, at the Caird Hall in Dundee, when this album came out so it was the first album of his that I owned. In those days I guess we all had a bit less money so an album purchase was a more considered thing. As a result this was one of about 20 albums I had for quite a long time and the only one of his, although I had a friend who later had Against the Grain and another who had Live in Europe, I still heard this most.

I heard him play all the tracks from this album live and most of them several times. Hands Off was a live favourite along with Walk On Hot Coals so the songs here are key to its strength as an album but there is also the brilliant guitar playing with a balance of serious and comic, ... Read More:

It's a tired and mundane album overall saved only from total anonymity by the cover of Knock on Wood. The Collins influence is obvious in the very 80s drum sound and glossy production but it's shallow and ultimitely unfulfilling. Clapton mostly sounds like he's going through the motions and the album has a "contractual obligation" feel about it. It's not raw enough to be blues and not slick enough to be pop. How many times have you heard Forever Man played on the radio lately?

Buy this only if you desperately need it to complete your Clapton collection.

For me Janis's albums (not bootlegs or compliations) split down the middle - those with Big Bro & the Holding Co and those without. Those with are the better, the happier, where she felt part of something. They're guitar based psychedelic rock at its best. They're raw, earthy, exciting, naive and bursting with energy. Cheap Thrills is best (live) and the studio Big Brother & the Holding Company an interesting, quirky innocent debut album.
Those without, Pearl & Kozmic Blues, are the unhappy Janis, full production, no band, orchestrated, brass and keyboard albums. They lack the passion and excitement and raw energy. I still play them often and love them dearly but they're not the best. The spark has gone. That said, Pearl is the better of the two.

This compilation basically cherry-picks one track from each of Rory Gallagher's albums - and still manages to be an enjoyable listen in its own right.
If you're already a fan of Gallagher then you probably have some of these tracks on the original albums, but this CD is a good way of picking up a selection of Rory's other work at a low price. If, on the other hand, you haven't heard much of Rory then this is an excellent place to start.
Highlights for me are the almost-title-track 'Edged In Blue', the rocking 'Devil Made Me Do It' and the stomping John Lee Hooker-esque 'I Could've Had Religion' (taken from 1971's barnstorming 'Live In Europe' - I regard this as the album which introduced me to the blues). Every blues fan should have at least one album by the greatest bluesman to come out of Cork, once ... Read More:
