Eric Clapton has probably been involved in more 'debut' albums than anyone else, being in Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek And The Dominoes and then officially solo. Eric is clearly stoned/wasted on the album cover and it looks like his Strat is propping him up in the chair!. At this point in his career Clapton was playing some of his best guitar as shown on the majestic 'Layla' album. This is a nice little companion to that album and the appropriately titled 'slunky' kicks off the album as though the tape operator has just started recording mid way through a jam session, Bobby Keys pre Brown Sugar on sax. Quality. 'After Midnight' still gets a bit of radio play today and is probably the most well known track on the album. ... Read More:

This is a wonderful album. It marked Clapton's sobriety following his heroin usage, and has a theme of redemption and rebirth running through it. Also, there's a strong taste of someone who has turned himself inside and out.

In places, this is passionate, elsewhere playful, and in many places you can hear a man asking himself what he has left. Fantastic stuff, strongly recommended.

This is one of Clapton's better solo albums from the 80s, which successfully blends his blues roots with more commercial songs. The band which includes guitarists Albert Lee and Ry Cooder and Chris Stainton on keyboards, is brilliant throughout. Clapton contributes some really good songs such as "The Shape you're in", "Ain't going down" and "Pretty girl". He also turns in some excellent versions of blues cllassics like Sleepy John Estes' " Everybody oughta make a change", the Albert King number "Crosscut saw" and Johnny Otis' 'Hand jive'sound-alike "Crazy country hop". Probably my overall favourite is "I've got a rock n roll heart" a wonderfully catchy, melodic laid-back rocker that as a single even cracked the US top 20.

Emerging from the early '60's Crawdaddy scene, The Yardbirds quickly established themselves as an R&B outfit to be reckoned with. Fronted by Keith Relf and featuring ol'Slowhand himself, they simply stormed through classics like "Honey in your Hips", "I ain't got you" & "Good morning little schoolgirl" before scoring a top three hit with "For your love" After this, Clapton left & the young Jeff Beck was recruited as the band entered a new phase as psychedelic adventurers. A succession of classic singles, "Still I'm sad","Evil hearted you", "Shapes of things" and, at last on CD,"Over, under, sideways, down" plus underrated winners like "Mr.you're a better man than I" ... I think this LP came out in '71 and I discovered it in '73 having been introdiced via 'Still Alive and Well'. Wow, what a difference two years make! From the hard rock of SAAW, this was much gentler (and for the most part) phazed, psychedelic funky-blues rock. This album became my 'authentic' sound of the era I'd missed through being just a little too young.

'Funky music' blew me away with its 'stereo' guitar, i.e. two completely different squarking solos going off in each speaker.
The solo at the end of 'Nothing Left' was spellbinding.
Although they didn't really feature guitar solos, I really loved 'No Time To live' with its beyond blues-style despair...and 'let The Music Play' was lush, soulful blues with female backing vocals.

Every song is pure hendrix. Admittedly the songs hav been jumbled together on one album but none the less all brilliant. Pali gap is a track every big hendrix fan should listen too, that is the sound of outer space. The album is a mixture of Blues,60's rock, psychedelia and jazz, and i seriously recommend listening to it

Want to get away from the frenetic "Eric is God" entrapment????? Then join Delaney & Bonnies backing band, which is what Clapton did in this Southern Rock/Soul good time rocking band. This really has stood the test of time really well and considering the time it was recorded (1971 I think) its really unindulgent.Delaney Bramlett was an old friend of Duanne Allman so I think thats how they wee aquainted through Derek & the Dominoes. Great to listen to in the car!

In contrast to some of the reviewers below, I'd say this is superior to the Boston material. While it is only a single CD and omits a lot of their best-known material of the time, both the recording and the playing are better - they do full justice to Need Your Love So Bad and Peter Green's playing on Rollin' Man is particularly blinding. Essential to any Peter Green fan.

I simply cannot believe that no one has reviewed this album before now! Jeff Beck is definitely a guitarists guitarist. I know you’ve heard Silver Lining and his stuff in The Yardbirds but there is much much more to this man than that. This is a rock fusion album that should be in every music lovers collection. The real jewel in the crown for me on this album is The Pump. Just switch off the lights, slap some dark shades on and sit back and drift!

I first heard Star Cycle on an engineering video about robotics when I was at college in the eighties! The melodic mix of Jan Hammer and Beck, perfect. I managed to catch the credits at the end and went out to get the album and never regretted the impulse...

The whole album is well put together and shows ... Read More:
