The trouble is here is the title,R & B years, the cd selection spans about 30 yrs. They should of just stook to the early stuff, eventhough unlike the Stones early years the Pretty's sound on some tracks abit naff.
They had less record success than alot of the r & b bands of the early 60's,and I enjoyed mostly the covers on this double cd,especially Rosalyn.
I saw them live a few years back, and advise anyone liking this type of music took seek them out.

This CD gets a 3 because of an indifferent remix (the 'Cross Me Off Your List' track is really pretty awful). Also, why change the original cover...? If you come across an original mix album or CD, go for it - 5 stars and up being one of Rory's best. Of course, if the Beeb can be persuaded to release the '76 Sight and Sound concert versions of many of these and Calling Card's numbers, then better still...

Music : The Very Best of Janis Joplin
My if you have never heard Janis' voice, you have never heard anything!

I had heard of her name but never actually heard HER : then they played "Try" on the radio and I was entranced by her electric voice, it comes from so deep inside the soul I was in another world right from the first tearing-soul-drenching sound of this incredible and inimitable voice.

On this album, some of her greatest sounds, the soul in such a voice plays havoc with your soul and you find there the enthralling "Try", her soulfull and passionate rendition of "Piece of my heart", her bluesy-gutsy version of "Me and Bobby Mcgee", just about everything to discover, rediscover or simply enjoy for the empteenth time the ... I had the original of this on vinyl and was very pleased to find the CD has 2 extra songs.
Pure rock - no nonsense; truly wonderful, especially for driving.
If I could give a Spinal Tap-style 6 I would!

Gerry McAvoy in his wonderful book about Rory doesn't rate this album as highly as some others (Rory's first and second in particular which are sheer class) and Gerry was there so he should know. But just re-listening to it now Jinx is crammed with invention and variety although - as another reviewer has noted - it majors on straight-ahead rockers. But for pure joie de vivre just put on 'Double Vision' and listen to Rory saying he's like a man with a voodoo - wonderful, wonderful stuff.

One of the greatest rory gallagher albums. Before I bought it I knew it would surely be 5 out of 5 and I now realize that it deserves more, as it stands out as an original album in rory's own style. The opener Shinkicker is great, and so are all the rest of the songs, including the two bonus songs which are every bit as good as the rest, except perhaps Overnight Bag, which is, in my opinion, the best song. One of the heavier albums, with the exceptions of overnight bag and the last bonus track. Must-buy.

Much like the impact Jimi Hendrix had on those of us 'of age' to remember his first ever UK TV appearance on Top Of The Pops, and how utterly gobsmacking it was as rock history had never witnessed such a trail-blazing comet before; and likewise, this album had much the same effect when released in 1966. With both events happening in the same year, amongst many others, it can quickly be appreciated by the more 'junior' rock music fan / student exactly how earth-shattering and radical this album, and the era in rock, was. Even today these songs sound fresh and exciting, and are full of the promise of things to come, had The Yardbirds the ability to keep a lead guitarist for a longer tenure than just one album. However, as we are wise with the benefit of hindsight, ... Read More:

78.August by: Eric Clapton

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : August
Clapton maintains a consistency with August. Better than Journeyman..much better when you listen to Behind the Mask and Walk Away. Whilst writing these reviews, I've just realized that I'm lucky to listen to such memorable tunes; the titles of which I cannot think of in other situations. Another song reaches Divine Heights 'Holy Mother'. Never knew Clapton had such a range.
A Gem definitely albeit a bit flawed.

Simply titled Big Brother & The Holding Company (1967), the album is Janis's one attempt to be part of a group ensemble instead of the "star." The performances are proof-positive that Janis never succeeded at blending in - she had too much power. In the opening number, "Bye, Bye Baby," Janis's voice is double-tracked. Thanks to the elegant re-mastering job, the raw beauty of that performance can now be fully appreciated. The group itself produced a fine debut album, but it's doubtful that the album would have been treated to such a lavish re-mastering job without the historical connection that Joplin provided. This is the best of the San Francisco sound: raw, driven rock where the musicians were genuinely talented. Sounds great!!

"A Musician" has to understand that music is product of its times. I bought this in 1969 and I still (occasionally) listen to it now. Yes, CD2 is long but that's what the best bands did then. It was experimental, stretching and although I can appreciate it isn't 2008's cup of tea, it was one of a number of landmark albums out of that era. I thought Henry Vestine's solo was great. Obviously, comparisons with a, say, Mars Volta today are unreasonable. Cut some slack, A Musician!
