The quality of the songs and the talent of the contributors gave me high hopes for this CD. In most cases though they struggle to top the originals. That said, Aaron Neville's bonkers but brilliant gospel version of the Mickey Mouse March makes the entire purchase worthwhile.

Ah, memories of the Harp Bar, Terry's reggae disco and meeting Jake Burns for the first time in the Crown. The punk music of Norn Iron was by far some of the best, the times it grew up in meant that the bands put more effort and themselves into the music (how else could Alternative Ulster have contained so much genuine anger). But it never got the large scale release it deserved (except SLF and the 'tones of course). The A&R guys must have been scared. Now, the wider world has the chance to finally hear what we knew and loved in those good old, bad old times - this is by far and away the best of the plethora of Punk single compilations flying about these days. I bought this cd when it first came out (15+ years ago????). I play it gleefully EVERY year without fail. I now have all of the Very Special Xmas series, but this first one is by far the very best one. Every track is perfect. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough. Beats all other Christmas compilations with ease. I NEVER tire of it - brilliant stuff!

I bought this on the strength of the reviews here (and lets face it, it is damn cheap). It contains some good tracks and I guess it does live up to the title. I found the production somewhat dated and the drum and bass doesn't really rattle the speakers as I would expect. If you are looking for a better all round compilation, check out The Front Line box set which is still my favourite by far.

There's no denying it, this album has everything for the discerning (and even the not-so-discerning) listener, from the classics that everyone should recognize, such as BTO's 'You ain't seen nothing yet', Thin Lizzy's 'The boys are back in town' (my personal favourite) and Steppenwolf's undeniably great 'Born to be wild', all the way up to the more modern classics, like G'n'R's 'Paradise City' and Stiltskin with 'Inside'. Even if you would never class yourself as a rock fan, this album has such an eclectic range of rock stylings, that there's bound to be something there that everyone will enjoy. Arguably the most monumental collection of world music ever recorded paints a sound scope of Soweto heritage so profoundly moving, it will make you weep. It soars and swirls and educates and dances within realms of diversity and poetry. The artists range in style and dialect, sketching a portrait of historic musical significance. Hearing such a tapestry, one could understand why Paul Simon explored [and Sting and Peter Gabriel exploited] his/their own pop aesthetic. At the risk of hyperbole mixed in for dramatic effect/affect, I will state that this album is a wonder to behold - an absolute must own for any human being who cares one iota about what music could/should/would be. Or what music is.
