I think a lot of people dismissed Atlantis when it came out in the cinema, which is a shame: it's a really fun film with a great cast, story, and most importantly to this review, soundtrack.

I think this was the first of James Newton Howard's scores that I really sat down and listened to, and I think it's excellent. If you haven't seen the film, give it a whirl - then pick up the soundtrack, because it has some really lovely cues - from peaceful moments to all out action pieces.

Highly recommended.

I LOVE THIS CD and all the songs on it, though i'm not sure why Westlife's Flying Without Wings is one of the tracks. none the less this is and exalent CD with some of the best and most inspirational songs i've ever heard. with the idea of the power of one being a theme throught most of these song you might think it would get repetitive. like hell it would, each artist add something to there song that makes it unique. there are of course other songs on this CD like wonderland and Bla, Bla, Bla which are much more light humored with out the whole power of one thing mentioned and that is what gives this CD and edge. no matter how embarrasing you think it is when you first hear it Polkamon is one of the funest songs to listen to on this CD and ... I ordered this recording the other week. Disney is known for its award-winning soundtracks anyway (or it used to be until the 90s), but the soundtrack for The Little Mermaid has to be their best work. It's Alan Menken at his best.
Jodi Benson is absolutely gorgeous as Ariel. The most memorable songs have to be 'Part of Your World', 'Part of Your World Reprise' and 'Under the Sea'.
This may be obvious to some people, but the songs on this soundtrack are meant to stand by themselves, i.e. certain dialogues that are part of the songs in the movie may be missing here.
CD 1 definitely gets 5 stars from me!

As for CD 2, this one mainly features cover versions. Generally, I think there can't be enough cover versions of ... Read More:

I remember this from years ago, back in 2000 when I was in year 10 at school. The songs were brilliant. Cheerful while sad at the same time. If you've seen the pokemon tv series you'll understand what I mean. I'm buying this album later. I'm so glad they have copies here, even if not at the top of the page with the more popular ones.
This is the definitive pokemon sountrack.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 5 star album displaying once again Menken's talents. The music can be enjoyed by child fans of the movie and adult music lovers, although I feel some messages in the songs are too heavy for young children. The music has a catholic choral style (as some is in latin) as well as a gypsy bohemian theme contrasting. 'Hell fire' is a passionate song of lust with a heavy theme on the morals surrounding gypsys, witchcraft, church and the law. But the right message is sent out in the ballad 'God help the outcasts'. The music brilliantly describes the time and feel of Victor Hugo's epic novel with a touch of comedy in the talking gargoyles. This c.d is fabulous!

Three tracks leap to mind as great: The Birth of Mewtwo, Three on Three, and Adventure in Paridise. The Birth of Mewtwo is great because it features the phenomenal introduction to Mewtwo Strikes Back. Three on Three has the music from the evolved starter battle. This is the part of the movie I never watch because I'd rather play through in my head what I would do if I were there (which, by the way would be not fight). Finally, we have Adventure in Paridise. This is an interesting track, because I swear it has music for the race scene in Pikachu's Vacation that was later replaced by Catch Me if You Can (a toss-up, in my opinion). For those of you who are intrigued by these kinds of nuances, this is another reason to by this CD.

Music : Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Although the events of this film sit within the time-scale of the original, it is an interesting exploration of some of the untouched themes from its predecessor.

The Beast's dislike of Christmas is assumed by the audience to be simple 'Scrooge'-ism. As the story unfolds, we discover a deeper, more personal rationale for his aversion.

The addition of new characters - Forte (voiced by Tim Curry) and Fife (Paul Reubens - aka Pee-Wee Herman) - gives the story room to expand.

Ultimately, though, this one is strictly for the real fans - or at least, completists! :)
