With the 'Singles Collection', which I also reviewed, this is a must for all Richard D James fans.

'Digeridoo' is included in its original and live versions and is an early example of his astounding synthesizer talent as is 'Polynomial-C'.

Some of the track listing of this album reads like a medicine cabinet and that may or may not be a reference to James' health problems as a child.

Also included is 'Tamphex' which contains a looping sample of a British 80s Tampax commercial "Are you one of those girls for whom time stands still once a month?"

Any owners of releases by other RDJ projects, especially 'Caustic Window', will notice some major correlations. ... Read More:

Few moments will resonate in my ears as when I discovered The Notwist a few years ago. I was able to feast on "Neon Golden" and "Shrink" like a ravenous vagrant at a royal feast. I've spent countless hours bobbing back and forth in appreciation to both those albums. Sadly, I've not yet be able to say the same for their latest venture.

Certainly, the sound of The (New) Notwist is there in all it's glory. It's just that it seems... well, droney and dare I say it, boring. Where "Neon Golden" was a fresh, "The Devil You and Me" just groans along. Gone are the hooks that get you singing along in your car hours after the CD has stopped spinning in your stereo.

This is still The Notwist... just without the twist.

Music : My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
This marriage of Eno & Byrne and the concept of taking non-music stuff off amerikan radio and stringing it to music may not sound too promising but it is astonishingly listenable. 'Jezebel Spirit' and 'America is Waiting' are mesmeric and this album rocks with rhythm and strangeness.
The call to prayer tracks and 'Help me Somebody' - spiritual stuff. It's also a great insight into the variety of stuff on the radio if you care to go looking for it, not that I do, too much hassle. You know, when you're skipping through the channels and suddeny get someone saying "All dormice are made out of marzipan" or similar and think "Whaaa?". The fact that they have done the spadework and stitched all of the highlights together for us is genius. I promise that you will ... Read More:

From The Archives 1-3 were a generous selection of unreleased and deleted FSOL tracks, but as albums lacked something; overlong and occasionally bloated with unexciting tracks, and slotted together with little care or thought. Volume 4 is considerably better, however, with a shorter running time giving the tracks more chance to sink in, and making it sound much more focussed. Each track is strong here, from the opening Dead Cities-era rhythms of Hidden Sign, to Mango Tree's shimmering acoustic guitars, the scrapped Eggshell EP track Climbing, and ending with the powerful Speed Ball. More interestingly, the last half of the album all segues together without gaps, reminding us of how FSOL albums once played out in the 1990s.

This, in my opinion, is Stereolab's best collection of work. It is a brilliant showing of what they do best: grinding organs, blissful beats and hypnotic loops. It is intense and inspired.

I cannot think of another band who can hold one note for several long minutes and yet make it the most exciting piece of music imaginable.

Highly recommended to indie fans, dance fans, and even jazz fans who appreciate expert organ playing.

I have a large and eclectic music collection and this, I feel I should mention, is by far my favorite album for driving at night. Whenever I have to cruise down a motorway at night this is the first thing I'll put on. Give it a go and I guarantee you'll see what I mean!

It should be oberved that, whatever the shortcomings of the remastering detailed elsewhere, this issue also includes a bonus track: Ultima Thule part 1. This is a fairly rare track which finds the band on the cusp between the OHR period (Electronic Meditation through to Atem) and the subsequent Virgin period (Phaedra onwards). It was released as a single with the above track as the A-side. The B-side has still to surface but may well appear on one of the other OHR period reissues from the some company. Watch out for it!

Sadly this is the type of old stuff no one cares for anymore. Regardless, this little jewel is a masterpiece of ambient sounds and some beats which stands highest among "early" electronica stuff. Everyone who likes FSOL will like this even better. All of the tracks are very good and it is a very pleasurable album to listen to in the dark, letting your mind go, flowing freely. Great artwork too.

I got into FSOL and related releases when I was living in London, so these albums are very cherished to me. I guess I am a nostalgic, anyway.

Apologies in advance for sounding like an NME journo, but one of the things I love about this band is their almost classical approach. Jason Pierce has themes that run through his records, and this is particularly the case with Pure Phase.

It is music that is not in a hurry for anything, and the length of some of the tracks really gives him time to explore to explore his music.

Pure Phase is not really music at all - it's simply an electronic noise which is sort of the aural equivalent of watching Blue - can you see the background changing? Are there shapes in there? Is there stuff hidden inside the noise. This track leads into Spread Your Wings, which ends with strings to make your heart soar.

Not everyone's cup of tea, and overall, Ladies and ... Read More:
