Richard D James makes music that Beethoven would aspire too if he was alive today. 26 Mixes is a fantastic return to form after a slightly weaker Druqks (although still great). CD1 is great to listen to at night. In the garden. Looking up at the stars. Naked if possible. (no experience of the last one.) It's haunting rapture. Personally although this is against some of the views, I LOVE the remix of 'Heroes' which is so wonderfully disjointed and all over the place. Bowies vocals add to the haunting melody. CD2 is one to listen to while walking through the city streets and wondering why you're so much more musically enlightened that all those walking around you. If you know Eno and you know cluster then you will know what to expect: for you mortals who have not yet discovered the genius of these artists then dip your toe in and feel the warm water of intelligence mingling with spirit. This is as far from rock and roll as you can get, yet it is tinged with the faint hues of acid comedowns and ecstasy highs.All you need to know is one thing. IT IS QUALITY.

Judging from the rest of the reviews, a lot of people like this album. But I'll bet there's quite a few GA fans who are mightily disappointed with it too. It sounds like GA trying to make a MOR pop/rock album. And for me, with the exception of one or two tracks, it just doesn't work.

'Novelty Waves' is the Biosphere song used in the Levi's advert so many years ago. With its ominous melody and growling bass, it probably is the piece of work that Biosphere (Geir Jennsen) is best known for, but it hardly reflects his full sound. This song was recorded at the time when Jennsen was slowly moving away from the beat driven songs on his previous album 'Microgravity', into a much more ambient soundscape electronic field of music. This album though is probably the best one to go for for first time listeners to Biosphere. It contains a mixture of beat driven and ambient soundscape tracks, as well as icy electro tracks and warm sounding electro tracks. Out of all his albums it is certainly the most listener friendly. After seeing The Mass on classic fm TV I was thrilled when my husband bought it for me. The music is a combination of classical and modern sounding music which is facinating in it's presentation and approach. What a shame the CD is less than 40 minutes long. I have not heard either of the other two CD's - yet - but will be adding them to my wishlist.

The first album I bought by Autechre was Amber. It was by default really, as I was keen on buying their music and it was the only one in the rack at my record shop. So that was it. Like a soundtrack being beamed in from another planet, I was instantly hooked. It was so other-worldly I was unsure if it was made by the hand of man, at least from this age any way. I was aware that most people seemed to think Amber as their pinnacle. When I got my paws on Tri-Repetae, I too thought that Amber was perhaps their peak. The first listen was definately not as instant as Amber, and I thought this record was a dud in comparison. A few more spins and I still thought it was just a bunch of noise going nowhere. From The Archives 1-3 were a generous selection of unreleased and deleted FSOL tracks, but as albums lacked something; overlong and occasionally bloated with unexciting tracks, and slotted together with little care or thought. Volume 4 is considerably better, however, with a shorter running time giving the tracks more chance to sink in, and making it sound much more focussed. Each track is strong here, from the opening Dead Cities-era rhythms of Hidden Sign, to Mango Tree's shimmering acoustic guitars, the scrapped Eggshell EP track Climbing, and ending with the powerful Speed Ball. More interestingly, the last half of the album all segues together without gaps, reminding us of how FSOL albums once played out in the 1990s. At the time of writing, this is the strongest ... If pressed, I'd have to recommend the second cd slighly more than the first, but the overall standard is high. I've played the cd often since receiving it and, even on the ancient hi-fi system I have, it fills the room with warmth.

This is one CD that I keep going back to, about 7 years after I first bought it. Sweeping soundscapes, haunting, relaxing, all the cliches that you can come out with. Hasn't aged a bit, and won't for a while longer.
