If someone had told me this album were some lost Sid Barrett Pink Floyd tapes from 1970 I would have believed them. One can instantly hear after this album the vast difference the arrival of Kjartan Sveinsson and his musical training contributed to the orchestral and string arrangements of their subsequent work.
I akin Von to Floyd's pre Dark Side material and for a collecter it's still a worthy purchase in following the history of Sigur Ros.

I have been eagerly anticipating the new Stereolab album for some time, intrigued by Tim Gane's tantalising account of the creative process that led to 'Chemical Chords'- of a batch of his own musical doodles from which the groop developed the final, fleshed out tracks in the studio. So yes, as one would expect from Stereolab, 'Chemical Chords' is a lushly orchestrated album (Sean O'Hagan's arrangements add wonderful texture, especially the strings on 'Cellulose Sinshine' and 'Self Portrait With Electric Brain'), but each track bears the succinct imprint of a singular idea perfectly realised, unlike previous albums where some tracks feel like two or three condensed into one. The synergy between the musical elements makes this another Stereolab album ... Read More:

I lost track of ambient sometime in the mid nineties. Positive reviews and the relatively low price made me try this one out and it cannot be faulted. "Golden era" Aphex spring to mind (ie both Ambient Works albums) . Like the best Ambient it envelops your entire being when listening to it as time becomes irrelevant. I cannot now imagine living without it. Each album has a tone to it whilst all link together as an inspirational piece of work. Words fail me.... buy while you can as this will be treasured as a work of genius in years to come.

33 years since I first heard it, Tangerine Dream's "Rubycon" still has the power to send shivers down my spine! Their second album for Virgin records, and consisting of just a single 35-minute work (split in the middle for the old vinyl side-change, of course) this is perhaps the most symphonic of Tangerine Dream's works. It is certainly, even now, the most beautiful and the most elegantly structured, as well as the most mystical, with its soaring, contemplative mellotron choirs, lush tam-tam rolls and hypnotic pulse-laden textures. It is also the least overtly 'pop' in style and steadfastly refuses classification even now. Haunting and delicate synthesiser motifs blend with the sounds of prepared pianos and custom modified organs and other electronics, ... Read More:

I bought this purely on a whim - the shop I was in seemed to be very keen on Russell and were selling this for just a fiver, so what was not to like. Fortunately, for once my intuitions were right and this turned out to be a beezer of an album. I was trying to think of the best way to describe it, given that the washes of luminous reverb and echo that cover Russell's voice and cello render it pretty unclassifiable. The closest I can get is to say its like Nick Drake singing over fragments of Lou Reed's Street Hassle. It really is that good. I'm not saying that it will be everybody's cup of tea, but for anyone looking for beauty bound in the most original of forms, this is for them.

Perhaps I should have said "Most Consistant Years" of this band.

I bought this originally years ago for two tracks only - "Love On A Real Train" and "The Dream Is Always The Same". These two discs have since served well subsequently in the car.

Not sure if the mastering is from the "Definitive" work done in the nineties, or whether it's just the original that's been repackaged, but WELL WORTH IT as an introduction to their "classic" years with Virgin.

This is like nothing else I've heard, even from FSOL. I must admit I wondered what on earth I'd bought when I first heard it, but once I'd got to the end I got it. Swirls of ambient noise give way to some of the most beautiful electronic melodies you can imagine.

It's got loads in common with classical music, you have refrains that pop in and out at various points throughout the album, in fact they even sample Pachabel's 'Canon in D' in 'Domain'. This isn't a pop record. You can't just stick it on whilst you wander round the house and expect to like it. You have to actually sit down and listen to it as a whole to appreciate just how amazing it is.

Highly recommended, but the recommendation comes with a warning to expect the unexpected!

Brilliant Trees , the 1984 debut album from David Sylvian is one of those moments where an artist completely confounds expectations. There had been hints in Sylvians work with Ryuichi Sakamoto ( who plays keyboards on Brilliant Trees) in 1982 ( "Bamboo Houses") and 1983 ( " Forbidden Colours") and indeed with Japan on the Tin Drum: Remastered album but this albums evocative mixture of jazz, ambient, world music , electronic and rock is truly startling in its complexity and textural depth.
That it is brilliant is not the issue though it is undoubtedly the case , it,s how the depth of the arrangements is allied to melodically rich songs that makes Brilliant Trees such a rewarding listening experience.
The old side one of the vinyl version with "Pulling Punches" ... Read More:

When he wrote and recorded the first track on this album, Jason Pierce was touched by genius. It is stunningly beautiful and is the best thing he has ever written. The rest of the album is great but the title track is the one.

This CD is awesome! The beats are fast and furious, Cyantific really smacked it with the mixes!
My Favourite in particular is the mix between track 3 (Glitch) and track 4 (Ghost of jungle past)Also track 2 is amazing (Space between) I heard this one on other mix CD's but the way Cyantific rolls it just sounds electric!!
Nearly every other track on here is great too, I can't take this out of my CD player!

Copied it to my IPod but the stupid thing has put gaps between the tracks so it ruins the mix, any ideas how I can get rid of them?!

Anyway you have to get this CD, I agree the tracks are a bit short but thats how it goes with D'n'B mixing!
