Force Majeure is without doubt one of Tangerine Dream's finest albums if not their finest. It's certainly the best album of the band's 1970s output.
After experimenting with a singer on the previous year's 'Cyclone', the group returned to a trio and played to their musical strengths.
The title track opens the album and what a number it is. It brings together everything that Tangerine Dream are about. Moody, atmospheric soundscapes, memorable melodies and a decent rhythmn section. It's twenty minutes of sheer excellence and moves along at an awesome pace.
'Cloudburst Flight' is, to these ears anyway, the best 'short' number the band have ever recorded. A moody, acoustic guitar led opening is broken by synthesizers and then the ... Read More:

I knew this album would be seriously over-hyped but i bought it anyway on the strength of amazon customer reviews. All i can say is this, thank god i kept my receipt. A dull, lifeless album, where every song sounds like the other. To be fair i was'nt really a fan of Mr Telliers 'Politics' and the main reason for me buying this album was the inclusion of half of daft punks production genious, but even those tracks moved me very little.

This album really is about as self indulgent as you can possibly get. Instead of getting the triumph i was expecting, I was severely let down in terms of maturing as an artist and in terms of album material, this really shows no progression from his debut material.

Only buy if your a fan, otherwise ... Read More:

After the departure of Peter Baumann, Tangerine Dream would change tack somewhat with this next effort.
After making moody, atmospheric soundscapes in their early days, the band had streamlined their sound a little bit, experimenting more with tunes, melodies and other instruments.
With 'Cyclone', surviving members Edgar Froese and Chris Franke recruited a singer/flautist, Steve Jollife and a drummer, Klaus Kreiger and made a progressive rock album.
'Cyclone' is one of those albums that splits the fanbase down the middle. To some, it is an inspired effort, to others, the idea of Tangerine Dream having vocals and lyrics is nothing short of heresy, and 'Cyclone' is a total disaster.
I'm one of those fans who actually enjoy the album.

The Cocteau Twins are a timeless group, producing unique, aspiring music that inspires me as a musician to write from my soul. With a very strong identity, the cocteau twins may sound recognisable throughout their tracks, but in relaxing to their music you come to appreciate the subtle differences in the tones of their tracks and the very light and floaty feel adds to the sensation that you are taken out of the present time and experiencing a sound that enters another dimension. This album is a very good album, particularly tracks 1, 2 and 4 in fact all of them offer something very special and as a pursuer of higher consciousness this music has, like others, helped me on this journey.

I have loved this album since it was released. It is sounds strange the first time it is heard. If you like it will become part of your life and part of your soul.

I saw the Penguin Cafe Orchestra play at Islington Union Chapel in 2007 when they played three concerts. It was one of the most astounding concerts I have seen. The atmosphere was electric with excitement that was shared by both the audience and the players alike.

The music was, apparently, created by Penguin Cafe's founding member so that he and his friends could meet and share a common interest. Not many works are created for nine musicians from very different disciplines; two violins, a cello, a saxophone, an oboe, pianist and trash percussion. The musicians obviously love ... Read More:

I couldn't believe it when this album came out because I was actually there at the time.
Why did the announcer say 'thankyou for being patient"? That was because the entire audience had been kept out on the pavement of Tottenham Court Road for about an hour after the concert was supposed to have started - before finally being let in.
It adds a bit of frisson or memory to an excellent album

As someone brand new to Boards of Canada I graduated to this from 'Music Has The Right To Children', having purchased both at the same time, so intially was almost intimidated by the markedly different sounds on openers 'Into the Rainbow Vein' and 'Chromakey Dreamcoat', with their guitar basis.

On first listen only really the mighty 'Davyan Cowboy' struck home, but whilst it remains the strongest track on here, others such as 'Oscar See Through Red Eye' and 'A Moment of Clarity' gradually unveil their charms on further listening, sufficiently so to keep you hooks right through to the poignant double finale of 'Tears From the Compound Eye' and 'Farewell Fire'.

Clearly this is not a band interested in rehashing the same album or even same sounds from one ... Read More:

This album is stupidly good. The only CD that comes close to this album is Air's 'Moon Safari' that is legendary itself. If you are looking for a chill out album and you don't already own this you have been missing out for years. 'At the River' is of course the best thing about this album but every track has its merits and 'Your Song' will also grow on you.
All great songs can be overplayed but very few remain as good as the first time you hear them but 'At the River' is one of those select few. Recommended for someone looking to relieve stress.
This is surely the best album ever made.

This shows a much darker, more foreboding side to TD's work of the period. It's interesting to hear shorter pieces too, which works well for me. The style is very much in keeping with "Stratosfear" and also "Encore" and, listening to it again, I think it's rather better than both......

I'd also like to echo the question What of the "other" 45 minutes they recorded for this film? Is it worth releasing? Even if it's more of the same, or the existing tracks expanded I'd buy it...

Another classic!
