Ever since I bough this album it has become a resident CD in my player. Which is a bit worrying.

As ambient electronic music goes this is pretty good. Posford has a huge and loyal following hence the 5 stars "genius" reviews. If you're one of those fans you'll love it but have it already. It's very well produced and sounds sparkling clear. On the downside it can get boring once you've heard the trippy noises and samples a few times. Not all the tracks have memorable melodies or musical depth. Rhythms can be a bit basic too. It's also very tied up with the pseudo "spiritual" new-age gubbins - you know the sort of thing: anything "ethnic" is by definition mind-expanding and spiritual; lots of samples about UFOs, LSD, insanity etc etc. All a bit cheesey really but as far as the genre goes it's a well done.

Perhaps conscious that fans were wondering what could follow "Zeit", which hadn't exactly got rave reviews, the band opened with something quite dazzling and stupendous. "Atem" means `breath', that's how it opens, with wind rushing through some vast cavern, like the breath of a wakening giant. Any thought of Space music is left at the post, for this is far more vigorous, exciting, and downright exotic than anything on the previous album. Chris Franke has a fair old thrash on tom toms, pounding away frenetically above Froese's blaze of mellotron, punctuated by the odd electronic explosion. The Cocteau Twins were a complete one-off and this is pure genius. Buy it while it is available....and at this price it has to be the steal of the century. Enjoy

The best place to start for anyone thinking of buying an Orb record as it's got most of their best tunes edited down to a nice length and offers one classic after another. Even if you already own the albums it's still worth getting this 'best of'. My one complaint is that there's no tracks from Orbus Terrarum (aside from having Oxbow Lakes as a secret track) which is a shame as it would be nice to hear a radio edit of Slug Dub. Still an essential purchase.

I had this album ages and ages ago and then it disappeared but it really is a vry good album but only if you are into this kind of stuff if you are looking for a dance album that you can put on at a party then dont get this but it is perfect if it is just yourself or a couple of like minded friends

Not your run of the mill money spinner from the record agencies, this album really actually tries to "chill" you out, I have a lot of great memories to some of the tracks on this album so i just had to buy it again after the first one was accidently killed! Bearing in mind i dont usually BUY albums, this should be explanation enough!! well worth buying by anyone who knows a good chill out album when they hear one, Happy Listening.

It is common parlance to go along with the time-honoured myth that the greatest of all English rock composers and songsmiths emerged from the the 1960s culminating in arguably their greates works in the latter half of the decade. I am thinking of people like Ray Davies, Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane. Whilst these songwriters and musicians have their moments of undoubted greatness,nobody can come close to the genius that is Jason Pierce. Lazer Guided Melodies is simply one of the greatest pieces of music to have ever emerged from this country. It's genius lies in the fact that it skillfully combines free-form jazz, plaintiff melodies and songwriting craftsmanship utilizing a variety of percussion and strings. I first bought this vinyl lp as it was released way back when and was, at the time, blown away with it. It is probably the ultimate glamrock record in a most understated way. It could even be one of those best ever recordings that we hear about every now and then but with which we rarely agree. This is a true statement of art. For those who disagree, take a listen to Baby's On Fire and then watch the film Velvet Goldmine. Take a listen to Blank Frank on a powerful Hi-Fi with the volume cranked right up. I dare you to relive the lipstick and fur.

This isn't consistently brilliant like Play or consistently good like 18, but it does have some simply outstanding material on it. The opening Hymm, for exapmple, and Into the Blue, God Moving Over the Face of the Waters and When it's Cold I like to Die. Those are the dreamy, whistful spacey ones. Also exceptional is Everytime You Touch Me, and I don't usually like that sort of thumping club music. It's tracks like All That I Need is to be Loved that I don't like. I find them discordant and jarring.
