`Sakura' had intrigued me for some time before I took the plunge and bought it - I could see it featuring regularly in fellow Amazonian's lists when crossed referenced to other electronica I like, such as Boards of Canada, but I confess that its ambient tag was always a little offputting. I thought this might be a bland an uninspiring record - how wrong I was!

The opening track `Saku' sets the overall tone of the record with its warm pulses of sound over which play electronic flourishes and synth effects. `Sakura' is definitely towards the blissed-out end of the elctronica spectrum but it is never dull. Its tracks are constructed carefully and minimally; built around simple repeating, melodic themes played mostly on the synth but with occasional ... Read More:

Pianist Tord Gustavsen and his partners Harald Johnsen (bass) and Jarle Vespestad (drums) have staked out their own distinctive piece of ground in a land that straddles the borders between jazz, church music and conservatoire music. The Ground explores in more depth the territory that was first plotted out in the trio's first release, "Changing Places".

The Ground is a gorgeous set of pieces, some more churchy (The Ground), some more funky (Curtains Aside) and some more lyrical (Tears Transforming) but all played with warmth and faithful attention to the quality of touch as well as the quality of sound. And the loving attention the guys pay to what they're playing induces the same response in their audience. At a recent concert, I have never felt an audience ... Read More:

'Hyperborea' was the last album that Tangerine Dream made on the Virgin label, after a near ten year association and to be fair, lots of success.
The decision not to renew the contract must have given messrs Froese, Franke and Schmoelling a real boot up the jacksey musically, and creatively, because 'Hyperborea' is, in my opinion, the best record that this line up made for Virgin.
Opening track 'No Mans Land' is an unusual number with an Eastern flavour and a decent rhythm, it just gets a touch repetitive towards the end but kicks things off rather well.
The title track, 'Hyperborea' is next, and is by far the best track on the album. Slow burning, yet powerful, it creates an atmosphere so thick, you would need excalibur to slice through it. Fantastic stuff. ... Read More:

How this album got 5 stars? beats me completely. This is mediocre music at best, with clean sound arrangements perhaps but cruelly lacking inspiration. Melodies are flat, tracks all sound the same and the sound itself is a poor re-rendition of electronica/ambient sounds of the beginning of the 90s. I put 2 stars just because 1 star would be "I hate it", and that cannot qualify as this soporific collection merely leaves me totally indifferent. I bought it partly based on the Amazon rating (will teach me) and partly because I didn't know what this famous William Orbit was doing by himself: well, not much, and to be frank I wouldn't be worse of not knowing...

France has certainly awarded us with some of the most talented musicians in the last few decades. Like Jean-Michel Jarre and Air, M83 bring to the broad-minded audience that we most probably are, another enchantingly and often mystifying masterpiece. This album could quite easily be a Continuation from the previous album, as if Anthony and Nicolas (the two founding members) decided they had used every last ounce of their emotions up and rested until two years later to see if it has been restored. But Nicolas doesnt really want to go through it all again, so Anthony Gonzalez is quite happy to take the lead on his own. And this is what the album seems to say - that Anthony appears to like this emotional rollercoaster and finds it so captivating that he is prepared to share it with us. I suppose the question ... I'm going to be brief with this review - I think i've ranted too much over the past few months with MoS albums!

Basically, I bought this album after listening to it at my friends house. I had completely forgotten about it being released, as I had previously dismissed it for being just 'another' album. However, after seeing it was mixed by the old legends themselves, I decided to give it a go.

I can say now that this is probably the best MoS album in years, which is saying alot listening to the other rubbish they release - all with 'new' material. As a DJ myself, it was great to see that The Annual 2008 is a much better effort, but what's missing? The quality of mixing, present on this album.

CJ Mac, Jazzy M and Marc Hughes all combine to put together this lovely album. For those who don't know, ... Read More:
