This is a good review of some classic old bollywood tracks. The sure fire test was when I took it to my mum, who was born in Pakistan, and even she was impressed. My only qualm is that they have added a few more recent tracks at the end of the compilation that I think don't quite cut the mustard. Nevertheless a good introduction.

It is rare or almost impossible to find ragas written in western notation. This is because most of Indian classical music is based on memorising certain themes and melodies and then improvising on them,and very little seems to get written down. So unless you can play by ear or have access to a teacher , its very difficult to pick up or play raga music alone. The book is extremely useful in that it first lets you hear a particular raga and then give you the notation to be able to play it. I have not come accross anything like this before and is especially aimed at a western audiance. Good book.
