This, to my mind, is the best of the solo albums by the extraordinary Shakti violinist. On this disc he plays long traditional raga forms rather than attempting to pull off cute, western style pop tunes, as he does on some of the other releases. I've had this disc for many years now and it is a habit of mine to put it on really loud on hot summer evenings, and have it drifting magically out into the garden. Of all his albums, even those recorded with Shakti, this is the one where you come to appreciate what a truly astonishing violinist he is, in my humble opinion untouched by any western violinist I know. Yet this album is not just about virtuousity. Like all good raga it builds very slowly from rich soulful beginnings, moving very gradually ... Read More:

This is Indian slide guitar. Wow, and I mean WOW!!! This guy is amazing and if you're into Indian music or just is an open-minded music-lover, not afraid of trying anything new, you should go for this. It is sheer joy listening to these virtuoso performances, and by virtuoso I'm not just talking about his technical skills, but about the incredible imagination, expressions, the flow and ease, the fantastic sound and rhythmical drive.

It is just beautiful music, so I repeat myself; if you're into Indian music and haven't heard of this guy - go for it - it is incredible, and are you new to Indian music, try this and give it a chance, you would properly end up finding it a very rewarding experience.

Music : Big Drum Small World
Buy tons of copies and give them to all of your friends. They will love you for it.
I accidentally found The Dhol Foundation's "Big Drum, Small World" album a few years ago in a store and have listened to it thousands of times. I always keep this CD in my car and it is the one reliable album that I can ALWAYS enjoy.
I love how even though each track is so awesome, even the entire package is so well put - it seems like it's one long track, but it's actually the well-thought approach wherein each song opens tying in perfectly with the preceding song.
Such harmony in perfect balance!

58.Rag Lalit by: Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia
August 23, 2003
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Rag Lalit
Hariprasad Chaurasia is undoubtedly the foremost proponent of Indian classical flute music. His work rate and output has been immense, and this is reflected in the number of CDs featuring his bansuri. But he is not a studio musician or a panderer to western taste, he is to be seen and heard at many concerts and festivals in India, where he faces the informed and critical audience regularly, and woos them with his superb long raga performances.

We are fortunate to have in this recording a lengthy exposition of one raga, Lalit. Too often Hariprasad's CDs are issues or reissues of short and comparatively shallow performances, but in this Nimbus recording, although it is studio-based, we can get a glimpse of a full performance of what is a beautiful ... I bought this album on the strength of the major artists that were involved in it's remixes, but not sure whether such a mix of traditional qawwali and contemporary asian breakbeat would work. Rest assured, it does! There are no poor tracks, but standouts include Ta Deem (ADF) and Sweet Pain (Joi). As an intro to either genre on which it is based, it is a very good buy and pretty original.

This is just such a brilliant, wonderful record - both Susheela's incredibly beautful voice and the superb support from her guitarist and partner Sam Mills. I hope their immense popularity in France will be matched by equal enthusiasm on this side of the Channel.See The Guardian's rave revioew of their last record 33 1/3.
