Setting ancient indian mantras to modern westernized music has turned into quite a prolific musical genre, with artists like Deva Premal entering the charts, although it is more or less totally ignored by the medias. One of the most prominent figures in this 'movement' is undoubtly Krishna Das, a longtime discipel of Ram Dass' guru Neem Karoly Baba.

KD may not have the most attractive voice in the world, but no one can doubt his sincerity and his authenticity. And his musical world is rich and diverse with guest artists on previous albums like Sting and Benmont Tench (from The E-Street Band). On this album he again colloborates with famous producer Rick Rubin, and the formidable rythm section comprises of none other than Steely ... Read More:

The opening piece is about Al-Hallaj the Sufi who was martyred on the cross. Not only is the music infectious and the rhythm and singing ecstatic but the song is about one of the greatest Muslim Sufi Mystics, the man who was so God-intoxicated he claimed 'I am God', 'I am the truth'. The orthodoxy of the day found this talk heretical and promptly had him crucified.

Then the last track: Jewleh Lal
Perhaps the best Qawwali piece I have ever heard. It has an intoxicating rhythm and musical structure and the improvisations move the ensemble to such a climax that you feel yourself lifting up towards the heavens.

Don't miss out the opportunity of picking this up.

This CD consists of twelve pieces composed for the ethereally beautiful Japanese bamboo flute, the Shakuhachi. The Shakuhachi produces a wonderfully haunting style of music that is full of emotion and the tracks on this disc are all brilliant examples of this instrument's art. All the pieces on this disc are composed and expertly played by Masayuki Koga, a master Shakuhachi player who I will definitely be looking out for in the future. Anyone who is a fan of far eastern music, and the music of Japan in particular, will not be disappointed with having this CD in their collection.

Living in Muscat/Oman, Arabia, working in Abu Dhabi and Duabi/ U.A. Emirates, and travelling all over Arabia (Gulf region) and the Middle East I like to discuss with my Arabian friends and my Arabian and international customers about traditional-classic and modern pop-music of both cultures - the Arabian and the Western (European & American) culture.

Since I get more and more international customers from India (Mumbai and Delhi) I discuss with them about their music from India. We enjoy to listen to the most famous European opera singers and the most famous singers from India.

I was deeply astonished about my Indian friends`knowledge about European music. No wonder, many of them studied in their youth either ... Read More:

A beautifully produced and hauntingly lovely recording of Shakuhachi Japanese flute music recorded in 1976 in New York during the Ensemble Nipponia's first tour of US. However at just 33minutes 28seconds long it does leave one wanting rather more for one's money.

The only "weak" track on Jonathan Elias' The Prayer Cycle is "Grace," featuring John Williams and James Taylor. And I put the word "weak" in quotation marks because where the other eight tracks are transcending, atmospheric and, of course, godly, "Grace" remains earthbound by it's folksy, Renaissance melody. (It's as if Williams and Taylor were channelling Nick Drake.) One could argue, however, that "Grace" is a refreshing break ("loo break," if you're a cynic) from the lush orchestra and passionate wailing throughout, in which case, at track number five, it is perfectly placed in the middle of the epic arrangements. In any case that is a minor quibble for an album that is near glorious and comes highly recommended.
