I was told by my music teacher many years ago, that the longer one listened to classical music, the smaller the ensemble one would enjoy. I am 60, and have reached the string quartet and soloist stage. I have enjoyed Bach's music for solo violin and cello for years, and play the viola transcription of the cells suites myself for enjoyment. I have several versions of Bach's solo violin music, and value Hilary Hahn's interpretations above all others, most especially her interpretation of the Chaconne. I believe this is one of the great compositions in western music, and I have heard no better performance than hers. It is difficult to put into words exactly why, but this is a critic's task. I suppose it is due to the combination her wonderfully ... Read More:

Compared to his more famous ancestors (who did, to be fair, have the advantage of actually existing), PDQ Bach has received relatively little attention.

The 1992 recording by the Turtle Mountain Naval Base Tactical Wind Ensemble is widely regarded as the finest rendition of the composer's lesser-known works.

March of the Cute Little Wood Sprites is, to my mind, the highlight of the album, in which PDQ captures the essence of mythology that goes back, according to some analysts, to the last part of the 20th Century.

My only criticism of the package would be the cover art - the small snapshot of the Tactical Wind Ensemble that the so-called "designer" has chosen to highlight gives only a small feel for the mass ... Read More:

In my lifetime the number of performers deemed necessary to perform Bach's major choral works has shrunk from a fairly mammoth scale to almost nothing. Now, while I accept the authenticists' arguments about contemporary performing practice, I am still left with a niggling feeling that the sheer scale and grandeur of Bach's inspiration and conception has been short-changed by the rigorous, somewhat puritanical application of these theories. I am not pleading for a return to the serried ranks of the Huddersfield Choral Society in their heyday - those sort of numbers certainly do muddy the waters of Bach's thrilling counterpoint. Nevertheless, at the back of my mind lies a strong suspicion that at the back of Bach's mind when he was writing these works ... Read More:
