These are wonderful performances from start to finish. Heifetz was the virtuoso violinist of the 20th. century par excellence in a very crowded field. His command of his instrument was legendary. In these performances that mastery is put absolutely to the service of the music. There are no distortions - nothing is ostentatiously fast, there are no bowing tricks to make the listener gasp - but this technically difficult music is controlled in such a way that it speaks directly and sounds - well, about as good as it can, which is saying something. In particular Heifetz does two things : he has a wonderful sense of momentum, so that the slower movements are never static or allowed to lose direction (though some of his tempi here are very slow) ... Arthur Grumiaux plays Violin Concertos No.1, BWV 1041 and No. 2, BWV 1042 most beautifully. He has an immaculate style and musicality. In the Concerto for Two Violins BWV 1043, he is joined by Herman Krebbers, another excellent violinist and the then concertmaster of the great Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam.

The orchestral support from Les Solistes Romands under the baton of Arpad Gerecz is very good but rather discreet.

In Concerto for Oboe and Violin BWV 1060, Grumiaux is joined by Heinz Holliger. This is another superlative performance, making this CD one of the best among Bach's concerto recordings.

The quality of recording is excellent, although in violin concertos the instruments are placed rather ... Read More:

I heard a track from this CD played on the radio a few months ago and was immediately captivated. I received it as a gift soon afterwards and have not been disappointed.

To me it sounds as if motifs from J.S. Bach have been put in the hands of a late-Romantic improvisor. The result is sometimes fanciful and idiosyncratic, sometimes delicately beautiful, and sometimes sheer virtuostic brilliance.

I still get a little thrill of delight at the opening bars of the Sonata in C Minor - C.P.E. Bach surely composed it with a mischievous gleam in his eye!

The Purcell quartet and all the soloists are of the highest calibre and show amazing insight into the music of Bach's little known Lutheran Masses. All the music on this disc was new to me and, as with most of Bach's music, I was immediately transfixed. The Mass in G Major (BWV 236) has two of my favourite movements - 'Domine Deus', sung by Nancy Argenta and Michael Chance is a real gem - Bach sung at it's very best. Even if you've never heard any of Bach's sublime vocal music before - here is an excellent place to start! Fantastic!

This compilation contains 6 of the 7 known Motets of J.S. Bach (BWV 118 is not included). They are executed with great attention to detail by Herreweghe and with great precision by the musicians. Each motet is performed in a unique and special way in keeping with the symbolism and meaning and quality of the text and music. For example BWV 229 "Komm, Jesu, komm" is sung accompanied only by a continuo bass, leaving the voices very exposed and evidencing their vocal colour. BWV 227 "Jesu meine Freude" is performed a cappela. These works are very complex musically and their execution here is as near to perfection as seems possible. They are minutely detailed, each semiquaver and appoggiatura is carefully considered in terms of its meaning in the context ... Read More:

This leg of the Bach cantata pilgrimage starts with a short trek across Suffolk from Long Melford to Blythburgh church for Whit Tuesday, and then a longer excursion for Trinity Sunday to the Orkneys, a trip of a kind familiar to air travellers in Britain and recently re-enacted on a grand scale at Heathrow's Terminal 5. The date was in the year 2000 of course, and the air traffic control computer had broken down. Whether at that date the entire congested air traffic over southern England was still controlled by a single small and antiquated PDP11 minicomputer I cannot now remember. I found out about this, of course, from Gardiner's 'blog' that accompanies every step of his and his colleagues' epic journey, and it reinforced my astonishment and awe at the ... Read More:
