I bought these CDs as they had the highest recommendation in the Classical Good CD Guide 2007. The sound is fresh, vibrant and the clarity and texture are amazing.

Rinaldo Alessandrini has done a great job of revitalising these well known pieces, as if he had removed layers of varnish from an Old Master.

As well as the 2 CDs there is also a DVD showing the recording process and interviewing Rinaldo.

Highly recommended.

Some people like to hint because Kissin is so technically brilliant that he lacks feeling or emotional maturity - this is the CD that will definitely prove otherwise to even the most sceptical listeners. It's not Brendel; it's not Mitsuko; it is Kissin, their different and equal, playing with a combination of precision and passion that can be light and very powerful where required. The Bach is astonishing and he has converted me to Pictures at an Exhbition in a way that no one ever did before.

This man makes boring music sound brilliant - what more can you ask.

I heard a track from this CD played on the radio a few months ago and was immediately captivated. I received it as a gift soon afterwards and have not been disappointed.

To me it sounds as if motifs from J.S. Bach have been put in the hands of a late-Romantic improvisor. The result is sometimes fanciful and idiosyncratic, sometimes delicately beautiful, and sometimes sheer virtuostic brilliance.

I still get a little thrill of delight at the opening bars of the Sonata in C Minor - C.P.E. Bach surely composed it with a mischievous gleam in his eye!

These concerto's have a brightness and freshness to them that is truly uplifting. The recording is sharp and clear, and it is difficult to see how they could be done better. I particularly like the Concerto for Harpsicord, 2 Recorders and Strings, but there are lots of gems. The 5 CD box set is also excellent value. Anyone who likes Bach should add this to their collection.

Andras Keller has worked heavily wih Gyorgy Kurtag (see Kafka-Fragments).

On this CD his eponymous quartet bring something of this avant-garde sensibility (much like Kremer in the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin) that renders this music closer to its Pythagorean (see Dentler) inspiration.

Excellent.

A truly remarkable recording. Sounds a little odd as is played in solo tuning so everything is displaced by a tone, but other than that, what can I say. Flawless playing, beautiful tone, how the bass should always sound. If you are a celist buy this and see where your competion comes from, buy me!!

Just to clear this up: this 1725 version of the St John Passion shares some music with the St Matthew Passion, hence the comments below. You will get a bit more detail if you go to the Harmonia Mundi website and find this recording under Herreweghe's listing. Lovely music and playing, needless to say.
