Just to clear this up: this 1725 version of the St John Passion shares some music with the St Matthew Passion, hence the comments below. You will get a bit more detail if you go to the Harmonia Mundi website and find this recording under Herreweghe's listing. Lovely music and playing, needless to say.

It's been too long since I listened to the original recording, and even longer since I heard a binaural release, so this isn't a direct comparison. What you've got here is an excellent recording of a wonderful performance.
What would Glenn have thought of this technology? Being a confirmed studio musician in his later years, if he was still around we might be salivating over some tasty piano duet and 2 piano recordings (or even performances), featuring Glen Gould playing both parts!

The cello is not my own instrument, so I am in the business of owning one or two good versions of the Bach suites, not the entire selection on offer. After reading a good deal of comment from those who know, or purport to know, the field more thoroughly, I'm forming the impression that whether by luck or by instinct the versions I have are as good as, and maybe better than, any others. The judgment of my own ears suggests that this is likely anyway. What counts as particularly good and recommendable for me is what I shall try to explain.

My LP version for many years has been from Fournier - relaxed, urbane and thoughtful. I have seen his accounts characterised as being 'romantic', and while he deploys a fair amount of expressive rhythmic ... Read More:

Glenn Gould's recording of English Suites is filled with unforgettable, magical moments, especially in slow movements, and the varying tempo selection even within one same movement (for example in Gavotte in 6th suite) makes the music more interesting and engaging.

John Williams is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished classical guitarists of all time and this recording, in my opinion, is one of his greatest. Williams plays with unquestionable precision and the phrasing is simply impeccable. After listening to this recording I am left with no criticisms whatsoever. For me the highlight of these recordings is the silky-smooth Gavotte en Rondeau of the suite in E Major (BWV1006a), which is sheer perfection; but the same could be said for every track on this album. Williams' virtuosity combined with the brilliance of the material being performed make this album a must for classical guitar and J.S. Bach fans alike.
