This is the finest recording of Bach's Cello Suites I have ever heard. Visceral, articulate, masterful phrasing, ornamentation and dynamics. Vivacious and delicious, the Cello Suites have been re-invented within the same architecture. Part of what makes it so visceral is that you can hear Mr. Isserlis's left hand fingers as they do their business up and down the cello neck. I also suspect that the use of gut strings makes a difference. Track 7 of Disc 2, the Prelude of Cello Suite 6 in D is particularly exquisite. The whole recording is terrific, though.

The first thing to say is that whatever you think of these performances, be careful what you pay for a disc amounting to only 41 minutes of music. I find one of the works much more successful than the other, and I actually suspect that the composer may have as much to do with that as do the performers. The Magnificat (here in its more familiar D major version) simply does not strike me as being equal in inspiration to the best of the cantatas, such as no 51, and to whatever extent this may be a valid view the recording (certainly) and the performance (possibly) conspire to reinforce it.

You may experience a slight problem in setting the best volume-level for the Magnificat. The setting that suits the arias best may make the opening chorus ... Read More:

I once sang in a choir and had the pleaure of performing these glorious works. You can't really go wrong here if you are looking for fine and highly listenable examples of Baroque choral music. You get 23 pieces altogether (11 in the Gloria and 12 in the Magnificat) and each is typically 2 or 3 minutes long. It's the audio equivalent of a string of pearls. My personal favourites are 'Laudamus te' and 'Domine Fili unigenite' from the Gloria. A lovely recording at a bargain price - buy it!

This disc is a bit of an oddity. I can give it a perfectly sincere recommendation, but I think I had better explain myself carefully, and explain exactly what I am recommending.

The spirit of the selection is much what you would expect in a disc entitled `Christmas Treats from JSB' or `Immortal Melodies from The Christmas Oratorio' or something of that sort. Bach's Christmas Oratorio is not an oratorio in the Handelian sense. In the 1730's Bach faithfully turned out a cantata for each Sunday and major feast, but in one particular year he elected to reprocess some of his older music, most of it secular originally, and string the numbers together for the entire festive season under the overall title of `Christmas Oratorio'. At the time of writing, the relevant Amazon pages list 14 CD recordings of Bach's complete Brandenburg Concertos. This particular one can lay a strong claim to being one of the best. It offers a faithful, superbly played and authentically Baroque reading of these evergreen works.

The six concertos that make up the Brandenburgs are very varied - they may not even have been conceived as a set - so it's refreshing to see that no artificial attempt at uniformity is made: the mantle of 'musical director' is shared amongst three highly accomplished violinists - Monica Huggett, Catherine Mackintosh and Elizabeth Wallfisch.

Technically, concertos four and five offer the greatest challenges. I remember reading somewhere that Bach may never have ... Read More:

It is difficult to know what to add to the many useful and intelligent reviews already posted on Amazon, but anyone who owns this recording feels the compulsion to share his enthusiasm with other music lovers. While other cellists - particulalry Casals and Fournier - have made indispensable records of their interpretation of these sublime suites, only this one offers everything you would require in a performance: full, deep recorded sound with the slight resonance and aura around it which the Burgundian gothic cathedral of Vezelay provided (Slava chose this venue particularly for its rich acoustic); flawless playing by perhaps the greatest cellist ever; wonderfully illuminating notes which both enhance your understanding of the music and also of how Rostropovich ... I love the Goldbergs, but never really heard them (and that includes the incomparable Gould) until I heard this. You will never tire of it. One problem: you cannot ignore it when it's on, so don't plan to listen while doing anything else!

Since the steady resurgence in popularity of Bach's music there has become an increasing number of Brandenburg Concerto recordings to chose from. Just like the numerous versions of Beethoven symphonies, there are now an abundance of these popular Bach works on CD, which on the one hand gives a variety of interpretations to listen to, but on the other causes confusion when deciding which to choose.

These recordings from 1978/1979 (orchestral suites) and 1982 (Brandenburg's) have been available previously on vinyl (the suites) and since 1988 on CD (Brandenburg's).

Of the many recordings now available, these remain one of my favourites. The musicianship of The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock (harpsichord) and Simon Standage (violin) ... Read More:

Like Bach? Like Electronica?
If you do, you need to buy this platinum selling album.

An album of straight classical keyboard virtuosity in experimental timbres.
Before this album, nobody had ever heard of a "synthesizer".
After this album, everybody knew the name Moog.(Rhymes with Vogue!)

Wendy Carlos? Genius! Pure genius.

There aren't that many genuinely seminal albums - but this is one of the very most original and best.

This Naxos double CD is effectively a reworking of the original single CD release `The Best of Bach', expanded to include more of the composer's music then attractively packaged with new artwork and a card slip-case cover showing an amusing caricature of the composer.

As with any `Best Of' compilation much of the composers work will inevitably be omitted - Bach incidentally wrote around 650 works so the 27 pieces on these CDs represent only a small proportion of his lifetime works. There are however over 2 hours of music here to be enjoyed and it's a good cross-section of Bach's style.

The sleeve notes are helpful for those wanting a little more than these highlights, for they provide recommended further listening (all Naxos label CD's ... Read More:
