I can only agree with all the other reviews. The performance of each concerto is absolutely breathtaking, and the execution by Murray Perahia can only be described as perfect. The clarity of each note is truly amazing, especially the ornaments. The crescendos and diminuendos achievable on the piano add to the drama of each movement, a facility not available on the keyboard of Bach's day; I am sure he would have been more than satisfied with Perahia's playing. Whenever I need a boost to my day, I put this CD on. A thoroughly recommended set of recordings, to which should be added the other CD with the remaining concertos.

having admired some of klemperer's recordings (his fidelio is stellar!) i was tempted by this st matthew passion, but after hearing it it seems - at least in my opinion - that the 'good old days' weren't always so good. over the last 30 years our ears have been retrained into period practices for this kind of music, and klemperer's approach just will not do. this is not bach but it is brahms and wagner disguised as bach ...

the tempi are so slow that i found it partly annoying (for instance a drawn out 'mache dich mein herze rein', not even walter berry's suave singing can save the day as the orchestra just drags on and on and on). i did not see any spirituality in it and it did not move me. the chorus is huge and bombastic which ... This volume of John Eliot Gardiner's year-long `pilgrimage' through the Bach cantatas contains, on one disc, four works that the master produced for the feast of St John the Evangelist, 27 December, over the years 1723 to 1725. The locus chosen this time was St Bartholemew's church in New York, and the concert we are given was the second last of the entire programme.

As in the other issues that I have so far collected from this admirable series, there is no hint that the performers are tired or demob-happy, and none that the recording technicians experience any difficulty in adjusting to yet another acoustic. None of the works here was previously familiar to me, and any sense that I might have been remiss in this matter was at least eased on ... Read More:

This is one of the best performances of Bach's solo cello suites I have heard. I have other recordings by Jaap Ter Linden and Pieter Wispelwey (equally fine) but I think this recording stands out. I'm not a cello player but Jean Guihen Queyras's performance to me appears to strike the right balance between correct tempo and clear phrasing. The recorded sound is superb, wonderfully warm; not too close with just enough ambience of the recording venue - a church in Sulzburg.
Queyras uses a 1696 Gioffredo Cappa cello, with a modern non-baroque set up, for all six suites and doesn't use a six string piccolo cello in the sixth.
The double CD set also comes with a bonus DVD, which includes a full performance of the third suite and a short film about ... Read More:

Refinement and elegance of her playing is pretty impressive at first hearing, but this is not the kind of performance I want to come back repeatedly. It's matter of personal taste, but for me Bach should be played with much depth and sense of awe. Maybe I'm too old fashioned, but whatever she plays sounds like light music and as if something is missing despite all the praises heaped upon her by critics and listeners alike.

This is a simply fantastic re-issue of four discs which I went to considerable trouble and expense to get hold of as they came out, and which were very well worth both the trouble and the expense. Nigel North is a brilliant lutenist, and these are his own transcriptions of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin and the Cello Suites. The transcriptions are excellent and, as Bach was an inveterate recycler and transcriber himself, very much in the composer's own idiom. Technically, they are brilliant and manage to preserve the character and beauty of the fabulous originals while making these transcriptions wonderful lute music.

I don't really know how to convey how good this set is, save to say that I have had the original discs for many years ... Read More:
