The sheer quality and accuracy of instrumental playing is quite wonderful on this recording - slightly superior even to the already supremely high standards for Gardiner or Suzuki. The solo singing is also notable for incredibly accurate intonation - in particular from the very firm Bass/Baritone of Matthew Brook, in my opinion the finest Jesus I have heard in any recording. The house-style here is period singing of the sort that eschews vibrato to a very large extent. Clearly the idea of one-per-part in the choir will put buyers off. I can only urge that any Bach fans who are not doctrinaire about 1-p-p give this recording a try - the benefits in clarity in the big contrapuntal numbers are immense, and to my ears the chorales are more interesting ... Bach's works for solo violin, the three sonatas of four movements each and three partitas of six dance-style movements each, were completed in 1720 during Bach's employment at Kothen at a time when his writing was at its most prolific - the Brandenburg concertos, double violin concertos and cello suites all originated from this period.

Bach himself transcribed parts of the work for other instruments (including organ, lute, and harpsichord) and is included in two cantatas (BWV 29 and BWV 120a). The works in their entirety have also been transcribed and rearranged by many artists and composers for guitar, viola, cello and piano.

Arthur Grumiaux, born in Belgium 1921 (died 1986) was a much acclaimed violinist, more highly regarded ... Read More:

25 years after his classic 1982 english concert recording Trevor Pinnock has returned to Bach's masterpiece concerto's with a new ensemble and although his new recording is good,i feel it still does not surpass his old one.In most of the concerto's on the new recording he has opted to use a small violone instead of the usual 16ft instrument and this deprives the sound of a healthy bass.Who knows if this was Bach's original intention or not but the bass just seems far too light in those concerti where the small violone is used. There is still some good playing here and Pinnock's new ensemble perform well enough for sure, only in concerto no1 is there a slight instibility from the horns. The trumpet part in no2 is better than most other performances i have heard(although ... There are some pieces you can get away with getting cheap recordings of, but when it comes to the monolothic Mass in B Minor I think it's well worth spending a few extra quid to get a good recording - or in this case, a near flawless one.

This massive, complex and enormously inflential work commands so much respect, it must be terrifying to perform it, but Gardiner's team certainly pulls it off brilliantly. Don't be put off by the authentic instruments aspect of this recording - Gardiner doesn't fall into the trap that so many other authentic instrument conductors seem to fall into: taking the pieces at breakneck speed. The speeds certainly aren't slow, but never feel rushed either. Also, despite being quite a small choir the Monteverdi's sound is very impressive.

I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

Music : Bach - Violin Concertos
Perlman is a violonist whose perormance is regarded as standard when it comes to Bach's works; in this album however, I was a bit disappointed of finding what I would expect in that the whole work sounds rather classic than baroque.
also, the orchestra seems to be a bit axcited of having Perlman as the violinist (!!?) as you simply can't hear the orchestra as it's always in the background. This gets quite annoying when it comes to question and answer parts between the violin and orchestra or when it's the violin who should be rather in background.. but that's a matter of recording I should think..

but in general, you still, no doubt, can enjoy the perfection of Perlman's performance, if you're not fussy about different interpretations of Bach's works..
