I have listened to many recordings of the St John Passion over the years but I must say that I found this one particularly moving. As somewhat of a musical oddity (Higginbottom explains his motivation in his sleeve notes), it is interesting in itself. However, the small scale forces and the fact that the top line is sung by boys, lends a wonderful clarity to the whole result. The U umlaut verses U without umlaut in the word "Juden" debate occupies huge amounts of time when people perform this work. Germans nowadays most definitely do not use the umlaut (indeed, friends of mine hadn't even realised that it once possessed an umlaut).I tend to think that it should be used as Bach intended and there is indeed some confusion at times in this aspect ... Like many people I was initially awed by the execution and virtuosity of this performance. But having got to know the work much better, and have begun to see past the shiny exerior of this performance. Gardiner's approach to Bach is ruthlessly efficient, ferrari like tempi often evaporate any hint of spirituality and the perfect, faultless attack of the choir adds to the generally chilly aura of this set. There is no room for human falibility in Gardiner's world, a creed diametrically at odds with Bach's own vision. The passion needs humility. I'd certainly not recommend this performance over either of the Harnoncourts (Mattias Goerne in the 2000 recording!) or the extraordinary Karl Richter in 1958.

It is amazing that Bach's Partitas are the first compositions that he published, though he had written hundreds of others before them. It is also sobering that he had to pay for their publication, as he did for many of the 12 works that were published in his lifetime. [About 1080 compositions have survived, but it is thought that Bach probably wrote about 2000.] These pieces are among the best of Bach's keyboard works and are played beautifully by Angela Hewitt. I enjoy hearing them played on harpsichord, too, but when they are played on the piano, I want the performer to treat it like a piano as Ms Hewitt does. The track that epitomises this album is track 7 on the Bach disc - the chorale prelude for 'In Dulci Jubilo'. The voices, perfectly in tune (as always) descending in scales beautifully while the tune rots the whole thing down. Just...stunning. The Swingle Singers are probably the best a capella choir in the world and this shows through with the enemble, intonation and unique sound in a class of its own. The range (especcially of the sopranos) is awe-inspiring, and the arrangements are top-notch. Not expensive, and will leave you reeling. Wonderful value for money, but take care, mine came with a disc missing. Disc 134 of 155 was an empty case and since it had taken more than 2 months to work through to it Amazon didn't want to know. Anybody want to buy an incomplete set of Bach? I thought not.

These are wonderful discs. Bach's sonatas for violin and cembalo are delightful, rewarding works, but can be hard to get into, in my experience. Previously I have had recordings by Elizabeth Wallfisch and Richard Tunnicliffe and by Fabio Biondi and Rinaldo Alessandrini - both world class duos, and fine performances in their way. However, I always had a sense with both of somehow working ones way rather ploddingly through the sonatas (most certainly not what I'd expect from Biondi!) and they had a slightly turgid, uninvolving feel to them. Podger and Pinnock dispel this instantly. Rachel Podger's wonderful lightness of touch doesn't trivialise the music in any way but, as with her solo Bach, brings a sparkle and verve which light up the whole disc.
