I borrowed this album from a friend when my 21 month old son started waking up at night. He was waking up a minimum of 8 times a night, needless to say i was desperate to try anything. On the first night listening to this cd as i put him down to sleep it's down to twice a night! We put it on while i read him his story and he listenes to it as he drifts off. At night when he wakes we put it back on and he's asleep in minutes! This cd was a lifesaver for me and my partner. Added bonus is we both like it too! I've just ordered my own copy. Now we wouldn't be without it!

I came across Magdalena Kozena via a BBC Music magazine 'taster' of her singing a cantata in St.David's Cathedral with John Elliot Gardiner. I decided to explore further, and encouraged by the previous review here, I bought this CD. I have probably listened more to this CD than any other in my collection over the last year or so. Sublime and simple, her voice seems so perfect for Bach, and the emotion shines through, sometimes moving me to tears. Really - buy this CD!

In the year 2000 John Eliot Gardiner, together with his colleagues here the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists, to say nothing of some distinguished solo performers both vocal and instrumental, famously pursued what they call a Cantata Pilgrimage in which they recorded all Bach's surviving cantatas in various churches round the world on the liturgical dates for which the music was intended. On the back of the record box here you will see a logo `Bach Cantata Pilgrimage'. On the front you will see imaginative photography suggesting travel, along with Bach's picture. Absolutely, stunningly, mind-blowingly brilliant. If you want a great cantata record, this is IT, even more so than the Gardiner pairing of The Big Two BWV140 and 147. Like the 140/147 pairing, these were recorded before the Cantata Pilgrimage of 2000, so are not the live recordings (hopefully soon to appear on Gardiner's SDG label). BWV 11 is especially marvellous, and worth having because it may not appear in the SDG set (some cantata editions omit BWV 11 because they consider it a separate "oratorio", rather than a cantata). However, Gardiner is including BWV 190, also omitted by many cantata editions because the first two movements are reconstructions, so I'm hopeful that BWV 11 will appear in SDG form. I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

I can't take the 1-star review seriously. It has no merit at all. This one of my favourite recordings, and certainly of this material I can't imagine a better interpretation, only a different one. The sound is just just so fresh and the tempi chosen seem to me to be perfectly chosen in the sense that when you listen to this recording, the last thing you think about is whether it is or is not the right tempo, or whether the technique is good or whether the vibrato is to your liking etc etc. The music speaks, and that for me is the yardstick for a true musician - you don't play for applause, you play for the music. Alongside the St Matthew Passion,Mass in B Minor and Christmas Oratorio, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and forces bring to us a performance that is both dramatic and sublime in a work of such profundity. Anthony Rolfe-Johnson is as near perfect an Evangelist as one could hope for with his innate sense of phrasing and articulation. At no time does the drama flag untill those beautiful moments of reflection in the Ariosos and Arias, sung with such purity of tone by all. I would especially mention Argenta's distinct timbre and Mullers sublime rendition of'Erwage, wie sein....'. This is a superlative recording. For years, I have enjoyed both playing and listening to Bach's keyboard works. These partitas are among my favourites (especially the 2nd) in the repertoire, and who better to record them than Murray Perahia... Some of you may be aware of his excellent recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations (from several years ago). For years, Glenn Gould's mechanical (and mathematical) approach to those variations had loomed like a spectre over any other recording I heard. It took Perahia to remind me that one can retain technical precision without sacrificing the flow and feeling of the contrapuntal piano record. Total agreement with earlier (2004) reviewer. Bright, dynamic, lively playing, with all the intelligence and wit of Gould and none of the drawbacks, i.e. no vocalese, no strangely dry and unresonant acoustics. The influence of Gould is there, in the clarity and precision of the playing, but this is a magnificent and individual interpretation. She has been perfoming the Goldberg Variations live recently, so I hope we can look forward to a studio version soon.

Simone Dinnerstein's disc of the Goldberg Variations is currently the 12th addition to my accumulation on CD of that work, ranging from cembalo versions by such distinguished performers as Koopman, Hantai, Leonhardt and Jarrett to piano versions by Perahia, Feltsman and Hewitt. Since 13 is supposed to be an unlucky number it may be the last - for a while, at least - and as such I have to say: what a way to end that particular part of my Bach collection! Dinnerstein's interpretation is at the same time technically flawless and emotionally all-encompassing to a degree I cannot remember having encountered before in more than 25 years as an aficionado of classical music.
