This is one of those CDs that you just have to play loudly. Super thundering organ, just like being there in the cathedral. Beautifully played.

This music is so wonderful that it needs absolutely no special pleading - just completely accurate, musical playing, and that is exactly what you get here. Nothing gets in the way of the notes, the flow of the movements. It's art concealing art, in a way - it all sounds so natural and unforced that it is easy almost to forget the peformers and the difficulties that this music imposes on them ; but for repeated listening, that's what you want. Quirky, 'clever', 'revelatory' approaches get in the way ; Bach doesn't need them. In addition, this is a very inexpensive set and it is absolutely cleanly and beautifully recorded. You really cannot go wrong.

This disc is as good an introduction to J.S. Bach as any I can think of. As the insightful liner notes indicate, Bach often used parts of earlier compositions while writing his 1730s concertos for harpsichord(s); researches into these concertos suggest that those included on this disc were originally written for oboe, and whether it's ultimately the case or not, this recording shines. Christian Hommel's restrained performance serves the music perfectly: each track features vast melodies and excellent ensemble-playing; meanwhile, the sound quality and balance couldn't have been better. This is pure, abstract music at its best: music whose power doesn't depend on what it might 'suggest' or 'represent', but only on its own language. And like all ... Read More:

Being an avid jazz fan and a lover of Bach's music I picked album up as a taster and am glad I did!
As all tracks are superb to single one out for praise is hard but Toccata and Fugue is breath-taking.

If you like to listen to this masterpiece of the keyboard music played on the piano rather than on the harpsichord, this 4-CD set should be very rewarding. The performance, recorded in 1972-73, is of the higest stature.

In Sviatoslav Richter's performance, there is absolutely no idiosyncrasy of Glenn Gould or sluggishness of Rosalyn Tureck or wrong notes of Edwin Fischer, however good their performance may be. Nothing seems to be imposed from outside, and Bach's music flows totally naturally without any quirky tempo and rhythm changes for their own sake. Richter makes use of the freedom of expression available to the piano, but with total control and restraint.

This is the art of the keyboard of the baroque period at ... Read More:

Jacques Loussier has been at it for the last thirty odd years. In this record he plays the famous tune of the Hamlet cigar comercial. It is breath taking and if you have a good hi-fi system you will want to listen to it over and over again. The quality of the recording will not let you down, Telarc is a superb record company. All in all a must in your collection.

Webern's music is among the most interesting I've heard. It's right on the cusp between "classical" and "modern", avoiding the stochastic excesses of the latter and breaking free of the occasionally hackneyed mould of the former.

His works are completely incomprehensible but that's what makes them all the more interesting. And of course the fact that the package is the complete set of his works makes it a highly attractive proposition. We want more of these "complete works" boxes.

The book that accompanies the set is comprehensive and informative, and contains the full lyrics for all the songs, in three languages. Recommended.

This recording by Gould is far too eccentrically moody: it unsettles. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, if that is what the music is designed to do: but, was that Bach's purpose? Too much Gould, not enough Bach.

The pilgrimage is now over. John Eliot Gardiner and his associates have chosen New York for the final concerts of this fine series in which they have performed all Bach's surviving church cantatas on the liturgical dates for which the composer intended them. As usual, there is a long and eloquent essay, from a sort of project log, by the conductor plus a short personal statement by one of the performers. Gardiner is as eloquent and illuminating as ever, and I had to wince slightly when he gave his reason for preferring New York to anywhere in England as the scene of his grand finale.

All the discs that I have so far acquired out of this series have been outstanding in point of quality, but this issue provides exceptional value in terms ... Read More:
