I have listened to two other versions of Bach's WTC, including Glenn Gould's attempts. His version is widely and often, cheaply available - I bought his version because of this - but his version is in fact a very idiosyncratic interpretation.

I was impressed by Gould - the virtuosity, the velocity and robotic snap of his playing, but the music sounds like a victim of vicious discipline - it will leave you impressed, but maybe also cold. If you want to discover the Well Tempered Clavier, don't buy Gould's impression first like I did. It is an unsuitable introduction to this work, and apart from leaving me cold, it left me feeling slightly confused and disappointed. Leave it till you know the work, and you will appreciate the eccentricity ... Read More:

Most of the Archiv releases in respect of Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage of 2000 were not recorded on the Pilgrimage, but as much as 10 years earlier. This is an exception, recorded live in Il Duomo di S. Nicolò in Merano in August 2000. And it is great. The pick of the bunch is BWV105, which featured a gorgeous soprano aria "Wie zittern und wanken", followed by a recitative and the bright, bouncy tenor aria "Kann ich nur Jesum mir zum Freunde machen", rejecting the world and all its works. Never have I heard it played with SUCH bounce; it's irresistible, you moan along, wave your arms in the air and generally make a complete fool of yourself. Well, OK, I do. At 9 quid, Amazon is giving it away. Buy now, before Amazon comes to its senses.

Since buying this recording some months ago I have played it to death. Whilst not sharing the religious faith which drove Bach to produce it I find it intensely uplifting and joyous. Partly the way Bach did it, partly the way this ensemble reproduces it. I know nothing about the technicalities of what goes into producing such a brilliant sound, but this recording just sparkles. The final chorale "Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen" is simply sublime. Bach got particularly good value out of this tune - heard in various other guises in his work ("O sacred head sore wounded) but who cares? Doesn't do to think too hard about the sentiments either ("now are thou all avenged") but as the recording is in German most of us won't have to do so.

Anyone new to Bach cantatas may suspect that this facet of his work might not represent JSB at his best. The obligation to churn out cantatas so regularly (for the Sunday Lutheran service) seems a sure way of sapping anyone's energies and spreading any inspiration far too thinly. This assumption would be completely wrong. The cantatas very often show Bach at his most creative, and six superb examples are on this disc.

Cantata BWV73 is one that manages to sustain the listener's interest throughout. Admittedly, it is one of the shorter cantatas (TT: 13'43 on this recording), but its two arias and two chorales engage the listener from the first bars, with its arresting, rhythmic motif. And the same can be said of other works on this double CD ... Read More:

This album contains some of the best Bach performances of recent years.

The first two CDs contain a complete recording of Bach's four "Lutheran" Masses. These readings now face stiff competition from the Purcell Quartet's vibrant one-per-part renditions on Chandos, and from Richard Hickox's 1970s recordings on Decca (I have yet to hear the latter, but familiarity with Hickox's later recordings suggests that they would be more incisive and dramatic than Herreweghe's). The performances in this album, however, are still among the very best. Herreweghe's conducting is restrained, yet profoundly lyrical and moving; his orchestra and choir produce a warm, beautiful sonorities and he has gathered a superb team of soloists.

The two cantata CDs ... Read More:

There are two excellent reasons to buy this CD - BWV99 and BWV8. If this doesn't sound very convincing, it may help to mention that the wonderfully melodious and up-beat opening to Walton's suite The Wise Virgins is based on the opening Choral of BWV99 (for 'based on', read lifted from). What's more, JSB himself was so taken by this one that he used it to open BWV100 (same text, trumpets and drums added, and included on CD1). No 99 in particular is full of delights, not just the first movement. Like the slinky chromaticism of the flute in the third number and the fifth number, for bass.

With its lyrical charm, the opening to BWV8 is of transcendent beauty. For me, it provides perhaps the most gorgeous Bach cantata moments of all (all of those I've ... Read More:
