Neither Bill or Stan were happy with these recordings but finally approved their release. Elvin certainly deserves a mention on the cover as he makes a substantial contribution.

Music : The Complete Blue Note Recordings
These are Monk's earliest recordings spread across dates from 1948 to 1952 including some tracks recorded at a Sonny Rollins session. The sound quality varies but it's not a problem. The early dates feature some sidemen who seem to be really struggling with Monk's music, but Monk himself just flies like a bird that has been caged too long. He was over 30 when the first of these recordings took place. Most of his great compositions are here, but not always in the best versions. Later recordings of Misterioso, Round Midnight and Evidence are all superior in my opinion but there is just such excitement in this music as there is in the early Charlie Parker recordings. Even his cover versions, like the versions of "April in Paris" here, are pure ... Read More:

This is a superb recording! The arrangements of the songs from West Side Story are done to perfection here, with a groovy and swinging feel to it. Oscar Peterson's fingering is thrilling to say the least, and his band members are definitely top notched accomplished jazz artists. To be able to play "Somewhere" in a jazzy manner and yet retaining its poignancy is itself an amazing feat. Try listening to the opening of "Maria", where a tinge of Latin flavour sets the scene of the story. Let this recording conjure up a whole new perspective on Bernstein's masterpiece.

A really cool CD - great performances by the guys. Rouse is great on tenor. I prefer first half of the CD as the second has vibes - which I find irritating.
