Music : Jazz Masters
The music on this disc is excellent from one of the all time great jazz pianists. In particular, "Round Midnight", "Straight No Chaser" and "Ruby My Dear" are fantastic jazz masterpieces and worth the price of the CD alone. Having said that, it seems a shame that the ten tracks on this CD give us only just over half an hour's music. Surely EMI could have given us four or five more tracks and brought the total play time up to a more acceptable forty to fifty minutes. But this minor quibble aside, this is highly recommended as an introduction to Monk's music.

Stan Getz never better than when playing Bossa Nova! This is basically the lot including several different versions of the same tune. Pricey, and 4 instead of 3 CD's which it could have been, purists will still want the full collection. Others should seek out the excellent long one CD set on Verve, Jazz Masters 53 which has much of the best from his Bossa Nova years. Whichever, the CD remasters from LP are awesome and I just play these over and over though occasionally I tire of Astrud's plaintive wail, where it occurs - though not her cheeky telephone song, (not on Jazz Masters but here and elsewhere).

This is a Jazz album that everyone should have in their collection. The Oscar Peterson Trio is joined Milt Jackson and what a beautiful album they create together.

Recorded in 1961 the album starts with On Green Dolphin Street. This is mellow and laid back for a while and then changes gear to swing. Perhaps the most noticeable thing about this track is Peterson's very restrained and delicate Piano solo. Even when the solo reaches the swing section there aren't the torrents of notes that you might expect. This is Oscar Peterson showing a different facet to his great talent.

Of course part of the reason for Petersons restraint on the first track maybe because a couple of the other tracks are absolute barnstormers. In ... Read More:

Labour of Love casts attention on a facet of Nick Lowe's talent that's surprisingly uncelebrated--his songwriting prowess. Having made his mark as a producer, performer, and sideman, Lowe's skills as a singer-songwriter have been taken for granted, but, as this tribute confirms, Nick has long possessed a knack for mating blissful hooks with pithy couplets. Here an assortment of players and singers from a range of genres tackle Lowe gems dating from his new wave heyday up through his brilliant late-'90s comeback. Proving the adaptability of Lowe's material is half the fun here, as Joe Louis Walker turns the '70s anthem ("What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" into a midtempo soul lament, "Half a Boy and Half a Man" ...
