Massively recommended. These were Getz's final recordings, three months before his death. A duo performance is never easy. The increased workload must have put tremendous strain on his health but you would never know from listening to this exquisite live double CD. Fourteen tracks, culled from four consecutive nights at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen, show Getz at his most
majestic. The wonderful Kenny Barron on piano shows complete empathy with Getz, and the interplay between them is perfect. This is exemplified by the ballad 'First Song'. It is a total masterpiece.

Yes, when I hear Webster blow his horn I'm smitten by the sheer beauty of his sound; the way he carresses his mouthpeace and blows his horn somehow produces warm and complex tone, capable of extremely wide range of emotion, impressive in all registers, but always beautiful (without even a hint of schmaltz or kitsch...).

In upper register he sometimes sounds sensitive like a violin, without pathetic quality (jazz) violinists can have in their upper register playing, in lower register my whole body reverberates with Ben's power. And for all this to take place it is not even necessary that he is caught at the peak of his form or in the right company!

Well, at this album he is right there at his peak and, in the ... Read More:

First of, there are three exceptional tracks here - Un Poco Loco, Night in Tunesia & Dance of Infidels. Bouncing With Bud is pretty good too. However, We are then given the dubious pleasure of not one, but two alternative takes of the latter (back to back I might add) There are also alternative takes of Wail, Dance of the Infidels, It Could Happen To You, A Night In Tunesia & Un Poco Loco! This is infuriating, partly because these alternatate takes hardly differ from the the original (in fact takes were blended together to make the original tracks) So you have to wonder, why wasn't this done here? If you must give us alternative takes; but them at the end of CD, so we can hear the original album how it was intended by the artist. Hands ... Read More:

This was pianist Thelonious Monk's first album for the Columbia label; it was made between October 31st and November 6th in '62. 'Body And Soul' and 'Just A Gigolo' are unaccompanied piano solos by Monk. The remainder of the tracks feature him in a quartet with Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass) and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Rouse sounds a bit relentless at times, but never quite monotonous. Dunlop's bouncy drumming is a joy to listen to, and Monk himself is on good quirky form. These are studio recordings, the sound quality is excellent and the playing time is 73 minutes. A very attractive item - bewitching even.

This is one of the classic jazz recordings. The quintet consisted of Charlie Parker on sax, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Charles Mingus on bass, Bud Powell on piano and Max Roach on drums. The lead-up to the concert itself was apparently a bit of a shambles, but the music is pretty amazing.

This first volume of recordings is an essential purchase for any Jazz fan capturing Thelonious Monk in the very early days of be-bop, playing many of his most famous tunes.

Recorded in October and November 1947 in New York City, the album features the following musicians:
Thelonious Monk - Piano
Art Blakey - drums,
Gene Ramey, Bob Paige - bass
Idrees Sulieman, George Tait - Trumpet
Danny Quebec West, Sahib Shihab - Alto Sax

Baring mind the age of the recordings the sound quality is remarkably good and of course Monks distinctive compositions and playing dominate proceedings. Of the non-Monk tunes perhaps the best are his versions of Gershwins "Nice Work..." which he takes to another place ... Read More:

This is small group jazz at its very best. After casting off the restraints of the bossa nova years and dabblings in popish fusion stuff, hear Getz doing what he does best - playing gorgeous tenor with some great sidemen. Stan really stretches out here - including a fast 'What Is This Thing Called Love'- but even though it was one of his last recordings, not much of the butter seems to have run out of his tone. He sounds irristable on the opening 'El Cahon' and all throughout the CD he weaves long flowing lines through and around the chords - a masterly show of phrasing. Mention should also be made of Kenny Barron and the rhythm section. They accompany Stan perfectly, diggin in or mellowing out accordingly. Barron further proves himself to be ... Read More:

Monk was weird. This collection of solo recordings in the 1960s shows him to be out of step with the age and all the more contemporary because of it. Whilst his contemporaries were raging and screeching, here's Monk recording some well-known and totally obscure songs from the 20s and 30s in the apparently hopelessly outdated stride piano style. Yet Monk makes it sound vital, through reharmonisation and wonderful improvising, that genuinely sticks to what is written but transforms it into something better. "I Should Care" for example is reduced down to a few components but sounds as complete and satisfying as a symphony. When I bought this 7 or 8 years ago, I listened to it almost endlessly for months. One critic said with Monk you enter "a private ... Read More:

It's hard to think of anyone who has a tone quite like Stan Getz: breathy yet rich, cool yet passionate, he was unique. Famous for his wonderful bossa nova recordings, he also made some great music with other jazz masters. This album with the Oscar Peterson Trio is particularly fine. Getz's warm, lyrical tone caresses a collection of great tunes with admirable collaboration from one of the finest trios of all time. The lack of a drummer allows an intimate, relaxed feeling to the proceedings, and the results are seriously enjoyable. Highlights include a swinging "Pennies From Heaven" and beautiful ballad work on "Detour Ahead" and "I'm Glad There Is You". All Getz fans and jazz lovers should investigate this CD without delay.

These recordings often were and are looked down upon by jazz 'purists'.

These recordings are the ones that Charlie Parker was most proud of.

When he was dying, he played his doctor his recording of 'Just Friends'. The version is absolutely beautiful. His alto rises over the strings like a bloom from a flowerbed.

'Everthing Happens To Me', 'Laura', and 'Out Of Nowhere' are similarly overlooked gems in his body of work.

The recently included live recordings are a joy to the ears.

Recommended unreservedly.
