Mr Bungle. With a name like that, you know its gonna be odd, or maybe humorous? Alas, the band have some cool toilet humour included. Some of the talking sections at the end of songs hit the mark, most fall flat however. I dont like the circus sections of the songs. It cheesy, plain and simple. Sometimes the record breaks down into cacophony such as #My Ass is on Fire, which I really enjoy until the 6 minute mark then it gets pointless.

However, there are some excellent songs on here, such as Slowly Growing Deaf, Carousel (which reminds me a bit of Madness when Pattons voice kicks in), The Girls of Porn (extremely humorous lyrics) and Quote Unquote.

They are definately unfocused on a lot of these songs however. I ... Read More:

This is the first of a series of recording made by Pass beginning in 1973, and it features him in masterful, powerful form. His formidable technique is simply stunning - he effectively accompanies himself, creating incredible richness with full chord backing and harmonic basslines, over which he simultaneously plays a free and beautifully phrased melody line - musically it is almost impossible to imagine that only one man is playing, and with absolutely no overdubbing! To add to the achievement, Pass decides to play some of the most challenging, up tempo pieces in the American popular Jazz repertoire.

"Cherokee" is a fast, intricate bop number, a classic more usually attempted by a full big band, and that he manages to make it his own on ... Read More:

This gem is a lucid, intelligent and romantic twenty-track take on American standards which far surpasses expectations.

I got the album on the cheap, and the fact that no-one else on Amazon had reviewed it coupled with its absence in most jazz encyclopedias (supposedly not in the top tier of Shearing releases) made me think I'd acquired a cruise-ship easy listening CD full of filler... However, although some of the moods do lean towards cocktail music, this release is a studied and beautiful interpretation of the American songbook. I would liken this to third stream rather than easy listening - note Shearing's quotations of Rachmaninov and Satie - and would wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of Bill Evans and of romantic classical composers. ... Great CD to enjoy when you need to relax. Most of these tracks have a magic within.
Why only 4 stars you ask? The jazz borders with the easy listening here and that kind of stopped me from giving 5 stars.
In any case: buy with confidence, it will not disappoint you.

This is the coolest record I've ever heard: it can sooth you no matter how wound up you get.

The Modern Jazz Quartet, playing keyboards, vibraharp, double-bass and percussion have produced this little album of nine separate tracks. Each track is based on a tune, mostly from the works of Bach (though there are a couple of new ones), which is developed into about single length. They capture completely in spirit what the composer Bach has come to mean to a modern audience - both the serenity and the emotional depth.

I'm sure I've heard these tracks more than once as movie scores (or at least the scores were heavilly influenced by them).

The only annoying detail is the occasional use of sleigh bells, which can be a bit tacky, ... Read More:

At some point in 1956 Sonny Rollins developed from being a promising new voice on the tenor saxophone to one of the great jazz improvisers. From then until his temporary withdrawal from the jazz scene at the end of the decade he produced a series of fine recorded sessions, including a classic album aptly titled ‘Saxophone Colossus’. Whether or not this Village Vanguard recording is one of the best of these, it is valuable for capturing Rollins in good form in a live setting accompanied only by bass and drums. Of additional interest is that the drummer was another jazz colossus treading his own path to greatness: Elvin Jones.

As these were live sessions, it’s not surprising if some of Sonny’s playing is more diffuse than in the ... Read More:

Let me get this straight, in this time when we are suffocating under an avalanche of tedious, manufactured, throwaway pop music, this sublime, beautiful record has been languishing in a vault since 1989! Genius is such an overused adjective these days but it is entirely fitting in this case. At the time it was recorded Getz was very ill but he roused himself and played as well as he had done at his peak. Buy it.
