31.Jazz Samba: Remastered by: Stan Getz

Music : Jazz Samba: Remastered
Jazz Samba is the first, but now possibly least famous, of the works by the famous samba populist and saxophonist, Stan Getz. Here he collaborates with the guitarist Charlie Byrd to produce, in my opinion, his finest Samba album.

Unlike the later Getz/Gilberto, Getz/Byrd has no vocal content and relies on swinging samba melodies and dexterous interplay between these masters of jazz sax and guitar. In tempo, it ranges from the boisterous E Luxo So, through the never-bettered Desafinado to the melancholic and beautiful Samba Triste.

Getz's samba does not engage the listener like other jazz forms. Its Brazilian rhythms fade naturally into the background, making it ideal for sophisticated party music. Given the right conditions ... Read More:

32.Virtuoso Vol.1 by: Joe Pass

Music : Virtuoso Vol.1
This is the first of a series of recording made by Pass beginning in 1973, and it features him in masterful, powerful form. His formidable technique is simply stunning - he effectively accompanies himself, creating incredible richness with full chord backing and harmonic basslines, over which he simultaneously plays a free and beautifully phrased melody line - musically it is almost impossible to imagine that only one man is playing, and with absolutely no overdubbing! To add to the achievement, Pass decides to play some of the most challenging, up tempo pieces in the American popular Jazz repertoire.

"Cherokee" is a fast, intricate bop number, a classic more usually attempted by a full big band, and that he manages to make it his own ... Read More:

Let me get this straight, in this time when we are suffocating under an avalanche of tedious, manufactured, throwaway pop music, this sublime, beautiful record has been languishing in a vault since 1989! Genius is such an overused adjective these days but it is entirely fitting in this case. At the time it was recorded Getz was very ill but he roused himself and played as well as he had done at his peak. Buy it.

This CD should be referenced onto a sister recording by Stan Getz: Jazz Samba (the original work). Basically, this recording is more of the same - but better in my opinion.

There is still the excellent rich Sax work of Getz and the great Guitar work of Bonfa. Also included this time are some equally impressive Latin American vocals on some tracks. Note that the vocalist is probably not Astrid Gilberto.

I liked this CD for the warmth of the bass and the utter smoothness of the Sax. The guitar work is good too.

The vocal tracks make a change from the totally instrumental Jazz Samba recording, breaking up the recording.

On a technical note there is minimal production content( as recorded circa 1963)- which ... Read More:

This is the ultimate jazz guitar album, it does'nt need analyzing, its the bench mark, Joe at his magnificent best, a fabulous tribute to Django.
There will be other guitarists that can play the guitar with their feet, behind their head, whilst eating celery, so what? If I could have attained the standard on this album, I'd die a happy bunny.
