Music : The Complete Rca Victor Recordings 1937-1949
Dizzy Gillespie's style was the nemesis of Miles Davis's. Introspection doesn't seem to have been a word often used in Diz's vocabulary, musical or otherwise. His playing did have a 'dizzying' effect always putting speed, dynamism and drama at the forefront of his performances. On this collection Gillespie's talent as a bandleader and musical arranger also come to the fore. He had of course a great theoretical knowledge of music and wasn't afraid to pass this on to other musicians by way of help and encouragement. With the big bands here he manages to register bebop lines in a larger sound and the over-all enthusiasm shows through.

Throughout this collection Gillespie never loses sight of the desire to swing despite his revolutionary ... Read More:

This album, featuring Stan Getz, Paul Gonsalves, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie and Wyton Kelly is a sublime record of a unique event.

The stellar cast do not disappoint (though Hawks sounds a little rough). Paul Gonsalves gives a breathtaking rendition of "Without a Word of Warning", proving he was the master balladeer of the time. This is a fact remarked upon by Stan Getz in the liner notes ("we were all gassed by Paul's playing on this date man!"). He also refers to Gonsalves as being a very underated player, which indeed he was and indeed, still is.

The openeing track, "Dizzy Atmosphere" is an upbeat number that allows all the main participants to stretch out a bit. As Gonsalves solos, you can hear the shouts of encouragement ... Read More:

This is a superb re-issue of an already good original album. This CD re-issue has five extra tracks over the original album tracks. At this stage of his career (1961) Oscar Peterson was at effortless peak that he maintained for an incredibly longtime (basically the 1950's to the mid 1980's.

This is best represented by 'Chicago'. Starting with an inspired introduction which keeps you guessing what the tune will be, followed by a gradual change up through the gears until at 7:13 top gear is reached and the band are absolutely swinging. Now Oscar is really flying, bits of stride Piano, double handed parts that require virtuoso technique... This is an astounding performance that everybody should have in their Jazz Piano collection.

This was actually one of the first (proper) jazz records I ever heard and I have recently bought it on CD. The MJQ were a strange outfit because many thought the format wouldn,t work (no horns, two similar sounding instruments - vibes and piano, playing Bach! and Christmas carols!!). However, my recent listening of this lovely recording only serves to reinforce the thoughts I had when I first heard it. These guys can swing but they do it with such an effortless grace that you actually feel yourself moving along with them. The CD also contains some classic jazz standards (Round Midnight, Night in Tunisia) that listeners new to jazz will find accessible - Night in Tunisia is my all time favourite example of pianist John Lewis's effortless way with melody and ... I am a huge fan of Oscar Peterson, but this is really a very average Peterson album. Don't get me wrong the trio are fine and the playing is as good as you would expect. The problem is the lack of variation. Most of the tunes are played mid-tempo and Oscar never really stretches himself. The only semi-uptempo number is "It happened in Monterey".

Out of 12 tracks only 5 are longer than 3 minutes and none are longer than 4. Indeed one is less than 2 minutes. So I'm afriad this means you get a theme statement short solo and theme again on nearly all tracks.

There is nothing wrong this album, but there are literally dozens of better Oscar Peterson albums to get first.

Stan Getz clocked up more than his fair share of classic recorded moments in his fifty year career, among them "Focus", his stunning collaboration with arranger Eddie Sauter, the "West Coast Jazz" session with its epic take of "Shine" and the latterday triumphs of "Anniversary" and "Serenity", as well as the more commercial pickings of the Bossa-Nova boom, kick started by the still alluring "Jazz Samba" album.

"Sweet Rain" is clearly the equal of these other landmarks. Released in 1968, at a time when jazz seemed to be searching every which way to find both new directions and an audience, it found Getz playing the younger men at their own game, mixing his already established trademark romanticism with a freedom, muscle and bite which makes the album ...
