To many, Dizzy Gillespie's collaboration with Chano Pozo spearheaded the development of Afro Cuban Jazz (or Cubop). Although Chano Pozo's life was brutally cut short in 1948 - 6 years before Afro was released, his influence throughout the album is undeniable. Manteca Theme, Contraste and Jungla are all based on the bass line of Manteca; a track originally composed by Gillespie and Pozo. Although "Manteca" means "lard" or "grease" in Spanish, it was also a slang word used by Cubans in the 1940s to describe "marijuana". The great Cuban percussionist was once quoted to have said to the equally legendary American trumpeter: "Me no speak English, you no speak Spanish, but we speak African". The album title couldn't have been more appropriate!!!

This recording is an essential addition to any serious Jazz collection, capturing as it does five Jazz giants recorded together for the one and only time. Charlie Parker is on Alto Sax, Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet, Bud Powell Piano, Charles Mingus bass and Max Roach on drums. From the first number "Perdido" you know this something special. A medium tempo version which never stops swinging. Gillespie in particular is in fiery form on this number. On "Salt Peanuts" Bud Powell plays a memorable solo, which precedes a thunderous drum solo from Max Roach. Recorded live in 1961, with arrangements by Al Cohn and Bill Holman, Gibbs leads the band of Hollywood players through some great tunes such as the opener 'Tico Tico' (featuring a fine solo by the tortured soul of trombonist Frank Rosolino) and others such as Parker's 'Billie's Bounce' which must be heard to be believed! There are some great musicians here aside from the under-rated Rosolino - Al Porcino and Conte Candoli on trumpets, tenor men Richie Kamuca and Bill Perkins, alto players Joe Maini and Charlie Kennedy, as well as Mel Lewis on drums. I love it!
