The album opens with Lester Young's 'Tickle Toe' giving the lie to the claim that it's large rather than big: this is big band music, though with steel guitar, twin lead guitars and fiddles, this is a big band for the 21st century. Perhaps intended to emphasise that this is a band record rather than a solo act, the track, while pleasant enough, is not typical of the rest of the album, rather undermining that message. 'I will rise up / Ain't no more cane' follows, and sets out the band's stall in more typical fashion - Lovett's distinctive voice, country slide guitar, West Coast rock lead guitars and drums, big band brass and gospel soul back up singers. 'All downhill' deploys Lovett's laconic humour "Joe Ely and I sit next to that John Hiatt, ... Read More:

Ms Chapin Carpenter's music is an elusive and deceptive creature.
On the face of it she has always been a singer/songwriter whose album
releases have an enduring, predictable and reassuring quality.
Somehow one always seems to come along just when you need it.

So here we have her ninth offering (not counting the 'Party Doll' and
'Essential' compilations) and the word 'Essential' does indeed
have meaning here.

Her warm, tonally sound, rock-solid mezzo and guitar carry these
thirteen fine songs with good grace, refinement and consistantly
convincing understatement.

A terrific follow-up to "Greatest Hits Vol. I", this collection is a must for Jackson fans; it of course has his mega-hit with Jimmy Buffett, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere", and there's a good balance between the up-tempo songs and the ballads. The musicianship is outstanding, including the masterful mandolin and fiddle work by Stuart Duncan, and piano by Hargus "Pig" Robbins.

The songs:
"I'll Go On Loving You" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Written by Kieran Kane (once of the short-lived but brilliant duo The O'Kanes in the late '80s), the words and melody are superb, and Alan sings it with the tender soul of a poet.
"The Blues Man" is so lovely, so mellow; written by Hank Williams Jr., it has a simplicity ... Read More:

I love Reba, I saw her in London some years ago and she was fabulous. I love the camp duets she's done with Linda Davis and it's a pity there's not one like that on this album. When I first got the record I went straight for the duet with Justin and was immediately disappointed, as you will be; but, when you've heard that song twice more you'll love it; it's an understated masterpiece; Reba tells the story and Justin lets her do just that, what a great collaboration. The album takes a few listens until you realise that it's all there. The Kelly Clarkson song is just amazing, you'll struggle not to laugh at one of the lines in the Trisha Yearwood, it's pure country trash, but perfectly done. The Carole King reminds you what a great singer that woman ... Read More:

Now, this MORE LIKE IT! Reg Meuross is a purveyor of high-quality, extremely melodic gear that deserves a much wider audience. 'Dragonfly' is a hugely accomplished, winningly melodic collection that is disarmingly honest and deceptively easy on the ear. Songs like 'And Jesus Wept', concerning the execution of a First World War soldier for desertion, and his family's fight for justice nearly a century later, is an incredibly moving affair, delivered with a heartfelt and touching vocal from Reg. Buy this album, and get a couple for your mates, too, 'cause they're going to want one as soon as you play 'em it. It lingers long in the memory. An English treasure.

139.Meet Glen Campbell by: Glen Campbell

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Meet Glen Campbell
I am another who was fortunate enough to see one of his recent live concerts. Of course we were treated to all of his classics, plus a few tracks from this latest new album. These tracks were very pleasant and memorable. Infact, an exceptional set of songs that amount to an exceptional album.

This remakable return to form is acheived with songs written by other artists including John Lennon, U2, Tom Petty and Jackson Brown. Some of these tracks are quite addictive.

So, there it is. Not typical Glen Campbell perhaps, but certainly classical Glan Campbell. If this is your scene, then this album is a must.
