Traditional country masterpiece Blue Kentucky Girl is a real roots country album, both in the sound and the nature imagery of the songs, as is obvious from titles like Beneath Still Waters, Hickory Wind, Sorrow In The Wind and Rough & Rocky. The rhythmic uptempo number Sister's Coming Home with its great fiddle opens the album, and is followed by the stirring slow ballad Beneath Still Waters. Hickory Wind is the Gram Parsons song, and of course Emmylou makes it her own with a soulful, delicate interpretation. The execution is quite different from her duet with Gram Parsons. Although some people might argue that not every song here is truly a Christmas song, every song here is entitled to appear on such an album. And any idea that a song has to mention Christmas in the lyrics in order to be classed as a Christmas song is clearly nonsense as that would rule out Silent night, the most popular Christmas song of all, and a whole hot of other Christmas perennials. I agree that some Christmas albums stretch the boundaries a bit too far, but this isn't one of them. So to the actual music, which Connie recorded at at a time when her popularity was extremely high. I love Martina McBride-so naturally I cannot recommend this hits collection enough!! It contains everything from her early big songs like Independence Day,My Baby Loves Me,the powerful A Broken Wing,Safe In The Arms Of Love and her first no.1 Wild Angels, to her more contemporary songs like Where Would You Be,Concrete Angel,I Love You,When God Fearin' Women Get The Blues,Blessed and her excellent socially conscious hit Loves The Only House. To have all Crystal's big hits on one CD is an impossible task. This compilation of greatest hits, however, is very near that purpose. It holds 13 of her 18 #1 hits and the songs cover the period from 1970 till 1986. The first song I had never heard of before, is clearly an ode to Patsy Cline and a wonderful interpre- tation. Since I received the CD, I have been playing it every day. Besides the mentioned number one hits, the rest are also big hits and this CD deserves at least the 5 stars I've given it because Amazon's classification doesn't go any further.

A glorious album. How on earth do you combine laid back electro country with a real groove to it? Jim White does it brilliantly well and yet does not warrant any sort of classification really. I can't tell you how much we enjoy his scathing wit and the sheer musicality of what Jim creates. I can't believe he isn't more popular (but quietly relieved that he isn't). Go and see him if you can and get this album. He's unique.

As a huge BNC fan, I find this fifth album a bit of a mixed bag. Happily, Beth's voice is returning to its former glory after dipping a bit in Deeper Still (understandably given her health - but then the sheer musicality of some of the songs on DS more than made up for it). But whereas each of the previous four albums had unique musical identities, this one doesn't. If I had to sum it up, I'd say it seems to be a collection of all the songs they couldn't squeeze onto the first four, plus a few others. One of BNC's qualities I most admire is how her songs and arrangements never show all the cards in the first verse/chorus: you always have to listen to the entire song; either for the lyrics, the descants, the musical embellishments, etc. Unfortunately ... I can't think of a single superlative that isn't redundant when describing this album. Quite simply, it's as close to perfection as I think it's possible to get. If you're looking for music to restore a sense of balance and proportion in the world, this is the one. Margo's voice (one of the sexiest and most expressive I know) combines beautifully with the instruments, at no point is anything overdone, no note is superfluous. Don't be swayed by its categorisation as 'country': this album is about as far removed from duelling banjos as it's possible to be. If you buy just one album this month, buy the Trinity Session - you won't be disappointed.
