I came to this album late, it having been released in 1999. But, as they say, 'better late than never'. The mix of country music on this is truly eclectic. From modern contempory through to the very traditional. All have been given, and benefited from the 'Chicks' treatment. The characteristic lead vocal and tight harmonies are brilliant. If you haven't added this to your collection yet, it comes highly recommended. The current price on Amazon is a bargain. What are you waiting for?

This lovely album perfectly covers the early years of Johnny Cash. Despite being a compilation it hangs together artistically, and best of all, does it in a single CD. The best music for the family in the car. You can take your pick of the American Recordings of his final years, but this is the album which shows you where he came from, his humour and greatness. These are all the tracks you have to have.

The first thing to say about this collection is that although some of Dolly's hits are here, a lot of them are missing including Jolene, 9 to 5, Here you come again, Coat of many colors, Two doors down, Joshua, Bargain store, The seeker, Old flames and You're the only one (to name a few). This is not, and was never meant to be, a hits collection. Plenty of those are already available. I'm sure that a lot of fans would have been happy for this collection to completely avoid the obvious classics (I know that I would) but I guess that commercial reality necessitated the inclusion of some of them. Proper records do it again with a really well priced reissue of some sweetly transferred sounds from an earlier day. Whatever your view of bluegrass, be it hokey ol' corn or sweet melody of the mountains, no-one will contest that Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs weren't masters of their muse. This CD has twenty eight tracks, all superbly transferred from Flatt & Scruggs time on the Mercury label (Sep '48 - Oct '50). Like others in the "Proper introduction to" series, the packaging takes getting used to but the booklet in the pack is informative and recording personnel and dates are given...unusual with "budget" packets. Townes Van Zandt has a lot of CDs available and not all of them are good. Be careful what you buy. Check out the reviews and track listings on Amazon first. In my opinion there are too many later CDs which are just repacked old songs with little or no new material. I love his music but I am not prepared to pay full album price for one or two songs. Therefore I was unsure where to start with his back catalogue then I found this boxset. The box set is amazing value. You get Townes first 7 albums (and arguabley his best) plus a live CD for £14. All of these CDs contain Townes songwriting at its most prolific and his best. The first CD contains his first two albums and is possibly the weakest (but by no means weak) of the set.
