191.The Essential Jerry Lee Lewis by: Jerry Lee Lewis

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : The Essential Jerry Lee Lewis
The original SUN stuff and no foolin' around! This double CD is the
real essence of the living legend called Jerry Lee Lewis. The man who
made Devil's music, who was literally crucified in Britain and USA
because of his marriage; the man who was banned by all radio stations
because of this although he was producing the best and most genuine
rock 'n roll ever! Anyway we know the story and he luckily came back
and would become a # 1 Country music performer during the seventies.
Here we have 40 of the purest rock 'n roll contributions with still a
lot of highlights one of them being "It hurt me so" a song that I had
never heard before in spite of all the JLL compilatons I own. At the
same ... Read More:

This collection of hits and more recent tracks covers several styles of music spanning a career output of over 20 years. Therefore, unless you are a big Linda Ronstadt fan, not all the tracks will appeal to all listeners. However, a number of the hits sound great and are well produced. The bright opening of the CD hits a major glitch (and not the last one) at tracks 4 & 5, when LR throws in a couple of recent songs to complement the older hits. All the new material is frankly awful and would not be produced were it not by a well-known 'name' in the industry, except possibly as muzak. However powerful and listenable LR's voice, the reality is that there is only so much anyone can do with sloppy material. The hits retain their appeal generally and were ... Read More:

Johnny Cash himself said that this was his favourite album he ever made, so who are we to argue. This is a gospel album with out a doubt but do not let put you off. Every song on the album is personnal to Cash and picked for a real reason, the liner notes are worth the money alone. Just Cash and his guitar singing his favourites. Brilliant!!! a must for all Johnny Cash fans and all fans of gospel music.

I bought this CD having seen "Nothing better to do" on MTV and was not disappointed. It has a country rock feel with some fabulous ballads too. The duets with Marc Broussard and Bon Jovi are highlights along with the title track and the one that origanially caught my attention. Leanne's voice is strong and powerful and there is non of the mushiness that I had previously associated with her. A positive change of direction for Leanne and I will certainly be looking out for her next offering on the strength of this CD.

Maddy has long been an important figure in the British folk music scene, whether as lead singer of Steeleye Span, as a solo singer or (as on this album) with The carnival band, who specialise in medieval and other traditional music.
This collection of Christmas music is not a typical Christmas album - it draws heavily on old and largely forgotten songs. The range of instruments used is as unusual as the songs - they even include recorders. I thought recorders were just use to teach children to learn to play an instrument - but here they are.

First the familiar - there are three songs here which will be instantly recognisable to everybody - Away in a manger, Joy to the world and I saw three ships. While shepherds watched is a standard in Britain. The ... Read More:

This excellent compilation, with all of its tracks recorded in a brief, artistically fruitful six-year span, is lavished with sad but beautiful music. Loneliness is a key theme running through Williams work. Merely reciting some of the song titles demonstrates that: `'Nobody's Lonesome For Me', `Long Gone Lonesome Blues' and `(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle'. The music and words also speaks of an inner sense of despondency; you can see that in the confessional lyrics of `I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive', which read like a suicide note, and you can hear and feel it in heartfelt vocal performances that express failure (`I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Living') and futility (`My Son Calls Another Man Daddy').

40 Greatest Hits shows that country music ... Read More:

Hard drinking and even harder women, broken relationships and life on the road. 'Trouble in Mind' delivers on most of the traditional concerns of country music with a batch of literate songs that (the curse of Texan country this) may not be country enough or straightforward enough for mainstream country success, but too country for wider acceptance. Brad Jones, fresh from production duties with Over The Rhine and Josh Rouse, conjures a rich warm sound from the excellent band that includes veteran steel player Al Perkins and guitarists Will Kimborough and Pat Buchanan. 'Drunken Poet's Dream' opens the album with mandolin, fiddle and dirty guitar and a tale of wild living. Here and elsewhere the band never really rip it up, and live these up tempo numbers are likely to be ... Read More:

Probably the finest female artist of all time, this CD must be the bargain of all time! Do I not like this CD. She puts on a grating voice which is combined with a strange recording balance to put me right off. And anyone who can sing 'From a distance' about the Christian God knows nothing about Him at all.

I also love these albums and like one of your other reviewers think Judy possesses one of the most beautiful and crystal clear voices of the 1960's - way better than her colleagues from the same era. Wildflowers is the purest album but I do differ with your second reviewer however. I find myself brought to tears each and every time I hear two of her own songs - SkyFell and especially Albatross. Each a deeply touching song - full of yearning, quiet sadness and wistfulness. Please listen....
