Worth the price of admission for Gaudete alone, this is a good solid folk album, you can picture the lead singer resting his chin on his hand as he nasally crafts each track. For someone new to Span, it is a grower, which is always a sign of quality in an album. If I have one gripe, it's that several songs, and 'All Around My Hat' in particular, tend to go a bit 'Quo' when they get over-excited. This is of the time, and to a degree the Span signature, but I find it an unnecessary blot on an otherwise great CD.

No one should need reminding that Roy Orbison possessed the ultimate voice in conveying paranoia, tortured emotions and fatalism in his songs so, at first sight, it is surprising that yet another compilation is needed. However, take another look. This release contains eleven of his sixteen essential Monument hits. Any album containing such treasures as Only The Lonely, Falling, It's Over, Blue Angel, Pretty Woman and Cryin' must rate as a 5* star album on the strength of those tracks alone. However, unlike many other compilation albums, this release has only one of his Sun recordings which is of no consequence since he was scarcely a rock 'n' roller anyway! I have practically no interest in Country music with the notable exception of Neil Young's Harvest Moon (which I also consider a masterpiece.) But this magificent effort from the Chicks is one of those albums that totally transcends genres. I consider it the equal of such classics as Metallica's "...And Justice For All", The Mediaeval Baebes' "The Rose", Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes", A-ha's "Hunting High and Low", Bon Jovi's "7800oF", Dire Straits' "Alchemy Live", Within Temptation's "Mother Earth", The Divine Madness' "Secrets", Def Leppard's "Pyromania", Whitesnake's "1987", Portishead's "Portishead", David Krakauer's "Bubbemeises: Lies my gramma told me", Sabbat's "Dreamweaver" etc etc etc. I could go on.
