Sugarland's debut album 'Twice The Speed'was different and sparkling and thoroughly enjoyable. It did have a few weaker moments. Thier second album 'Enjoy The Ride' was poor. It was one paced poor quality Bon Jovi type country rock although it had a few good moments. Thier third album, this one, is very good. It has variety, energy, good songs, some very good songs, with really good vocals from Jennifer Nettles. She is the voice of Sugarland, you rarely hear her duo partner. This has some of the better parts of the second album, has built on the first album and added to it. Really enjoyable and recommended.

I came to the Felice Brothers blind, but Oh! what a discovery. It could be tempting to pigeonhole them, focusing on the Dylanesque quality of the vocals, but this would be a mistake. The vocals are of a burr that seems to combine Guy Clarke and Levon Helm with a shot of Jack Daniels!! Now saying they sound like Dylan would not have conveyed that AND missed much more. The harmonies are almost theatrical in their feel, but the theatre in this instince is the Catskills not Carnegie Hall. There is for me a feel of ribald earthiness, where the excellent lyrics and music combine to produce a soundtrack to a way of life, or a feeling for life. If you're like me and have never paid any interest to KD Lang before now and have not heard any of her stuff except 'Constant Craving', then read on. I stumbled upon this album a couple of months after it had been released. As usual, I searched YouTube for any tracks on there to get a first impression and to see if I wanted to investigate further. I also watched a recent interview with KD, interspersed with tracks from Watershed. I heard 'I Dream Of Spring' and really liked it. I thought I'd download the full album and give it a listen. I love it! It is full of delicate acoustic guitars and beautiful strings (but not overbearing), as well as soft percussion. The best thing though, is KD's voice. Karma ? Yin and Yang ? Synchronicity ? Who Know's. What I do know for sure, however, is that having spent a couple of painfully wasted hours listening to Santogold's execrable debut album I was very ready for some honest musical sustenance. I found it here In Ryan Bingham's most recent album 'Mescalito'. Comparisons abound but try to put them to one side. Let's listen to Mr Bingham on his own evident merits. Steve Earle music is best described as country-rock. The skull and cross bones that form the cover of Copperhead Road album warn of what is to come, a heavy mix of potent music shot through with the reflections of an wild young man who is older than his years. Inserts show a relaxed Earle, fag in mouth, black shades and dressed in denim. A strong start with 'Copperhead Road' on which you can apparently 'smell the whisky burnin'; 'The Devil's Right Hand' refers to a pistol and though the song has a strange lyrical resonace it isn't until 'Johnny Come Lately' (on which the Pogues play) when the album begins to rock.. Wonderful, infectious, unaffected, honest, direct, delicious, good old-fashioned, wholly entertaining, aural experience. Just driven up to Edinburgh with this blasting on CD. Four of us - we all loved it. A teeny teeny bit evocative of the great George Melley in live performance -in nicest possible way (powerful immediacy and gusto, we mean). Heard it on R4's 'Loose Ends' on Saturday 2nd August and ordered at once. BTW recommended on the cover to turn volume up to max for maximum enjoyment. We did.

I always had a problem with Country as a youngster, growing up as I did in a working class English town and hooked on Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Sabbath. Though I could listen to Johnny Cash, some of the female country stars of the time (Tammy Wynette etc) really grated on me. I bought this collection on a whim while working out in California a couple of years ago. This was the first time I really listened to her as a recording artist in her own right, though I was familiar with her work with Gram Parsons and her excellent backing vocals on Dylan's Desire. Alison Krauss has one of the beautiful voices in modern music. But this album shows Union Station to be so much more than her stunning vocals. The stand out feature of this album is the musicianship of all members of the band. The addition of jerry douglas dobro has added a new layer to their compositions. This album is simply a must.

Lucinda Williams' song Side Of The Road is one of the most extraordinary, beautiful and haunting songs I've ever heard, and some of the tracks on her last CD came very close to that quality in their ability to take you into the heart of somebody else's world with feeling. But for my money there's nothing to touch her best work on World Without Tears. To me the song writing all sounds a bit labored and tired, the delivery and voice uncertain as to what she's aiming for and the quasi-rap just plain wrong for both her voice and the material. I don't care what the other reviewers say, I would advise you give this a miss.
