I saw Devon Sproule at the Tolpuddle Festival recently - she's a great musician and I loved her set. Afterwards I bought this CD which she was kind enough to sign and to chat for a few minutes. A very normal, friendly lady. I have played this CD almost non-stop since then. It's very evocative of that idealized rural South that I hope still exists. It is totally charming. Devon is a great songwriter but, for me, the songs were not immediately obvious. The lyrics and music are maybe a little eccentric. But all good things take a little effort and, if you persist, I think you will fall in love with this album and the vision of Virginia it conjures up in your mind.

I love Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. There is something completely compelling about this record. At a stage when the band was on the verge of breaking up something magic happened and they produced what is probably the most complete alt-country (I'm not using the term Americana!!) release of it's time. I'm not going to pick any track because there are no turkeys on the great record.

It also comes with a 70 min extra CD of out-takes and unreleased tracks, many of which would put other bands to shame if they had been on the original release. Faultless.

Electric guitar playing does not come any better than this. The seemingly effortless musical mastery of these two legendary players is everything I expected and more when I bought the orginial vinyl versions of these recordings. The only mystery to me is why did they not record together more often? Separately they made marvellous recordings, but together they inspired each other to new heights, as is evident in these tracks. The personal and musical chemistry between Chet and Les is so good that you can hear it not only in their music, but in the little snatches of their conversational camaradie that the recording engineers left on the tapes. The mutual respect between these two musicians has created some of the most beautiful electric guitar recordings ... Read More:

Shhh...I've never told anyone this before but...I really love this album. It's partly due to nostalgia; as a child of the 90s this was everywhere, school discos, friends' parties, barbecues, radio, blasting out of every other car, etc etc. When punk and the Sex Pistols burst onto my musical landscape, this, along with Britney Spears etc, was thrown out- or rather moved downstairs onto my parents' cd rack- but listening back to it now I grudgingly admit that I quite enjoy it in a cheesy kind of way (thankfully Britney has long since left my household). It's not country music (cue cries of "sell-out" and 1-star reviews from outraged country music fans)- just great commercial, radio-friendly pop (played mostly by real people on real instruments unlike much ... Nick Hornby's 31 Songs mentions this album. Many of the other people I listen to refernece Steve Earle, so I bought it and listened and loved it. Why not 5 stars? Nobody is perfect but this is a thumping good album and a great introduction for me to Steve Earle - I will be buying more!

I saw this while out shopping one day and decided to buy it. It's actually a pretty good album though I was surprised at some of the tracks, I didn't think they were really in the genre of Country Music. For example, I would classify "Man, I feel like a woman" and "Dance the night away" as more pop. However, as a fairly newcomer to country music, I quite enjoyed hearing these tracks as it made me feel I at least knew some of them.

There's a lot of really good songs on this double CD pack and I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted a well rounded country CD.

I'm 19, and I love Don Williams. I admit that I didn't hear of him until a few months ago, please don't hate me. I was sitting in ront of the computer in our living room, when I heard some really nice music coming from the kitchen where my mum was. I really like country music, especially Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton, and Lonestar, and I asked her who it was. She replied Don Williams, I went back to the computer, logged on the internet and bought this CD, and his love sogns cd, which really was a comfort when I was going through a bad patch after moving to university. 'Tears of the loney, keep falling all the time, Tears of the lonely never dry.' What a sad song! But it isn't on this cd, so if you want to hear it, you'll have to listen to the love songs cd.

Time Well Wasted is quite simply amazing!!
He opens with his excellent no.1 hit The World, the best drinkin' song ever written Alcohol, and the beautiful electric guitar filled no.1 ballad She's Everything(gorgeous song). He also includes 2 fantastic duets with Out In The Parkin' Lot feat the great Alan Jackson and the spirtual no.1 hit When I Get Where I'm Going feat Dolly Pardon.Other gems is the more traditional sounding song Flowers and the beautiful acoustic ballad Rainin' You,I just love Brad's vocals on this!!
There's a reason why this album was no.1 and was the ACM & CMA Album Of The Year.....

I just had to write about the marvel that is "I Dream A Highway" the last song on this cd, if there's one song you hear in your lifetime make it this one! it achingly beautiful, introspective, spine-tingling - simply put Brilliant!! worth the price of the cd alone and it's a song that i have been listening to non-stop all month!!

The cd in general honestly is brilliant! but Gillian really has outdone herself with "I Dream A Highway"!

HIGHLY recomended!

Anything with Gene Clark present is worth investigating, this complete collection of all the Dillard & Clark back tracks is a perfect example of this.

The music shows the commercial birth of Bluegrass tinged country rock and mildly rocking country rock. Alison Krauss must have listened to these recordings many times!

Although the musical content is great the liner notes are not too helpful. There are no clear song writing credits anywhere and no mention of the female singer on the first album...who was she? Donna Washburn is present on the second album tracks, was she there on the first as well?

To summerise - a great bunch of historic recordings (with some mild filler tracks, as expected) but poor specific player/writing credit ... Read More:
