The 48 Preludes and Fugues form one of Bach's greatest works for the keyboard. There is a vast range of pieces which are charming, dramatic, joyful, melancholy...you name it. They are all beautifully done with Bach's unrivalled counterpoint and sense of structure and are an unalloyed pleasure from the famous and lovely first Prelude from Book One to the mighty, intense B minor fugue which concludes Book Two.

Angela Hewitt plays Bach superbly. Her work has attracted universal admiration, and these discs show why. Her technique is impeccable, so that each line is perfectly articulated while blending ideally with the others. She respects and conveys the structure of the music while bringing out its wonderful range of emotions and ... Read More:

This third Kissen Chopin recital to be issued certainly provides some exciting pianism. It is hard to imagine how ten fingers can be coordinated to produce the rippling effects in Prelude 3, the whirlwinds in Prelude 8, the headlong galloping in Prelude 16, and the terrifying swirl of sound in the Sonatas's finale. It is also hard to imagine how much one would need to pay in order to sit in such close proximity to the piano as it is recorded here. Never have I heard the three repeated notes at the bottom end of the keyboard sound as powerful as they do at the close of Prelude 24.

Chopin offers much more than opportunities for technical display, however, and few of these additional components are evident here. The tears below the ... Read More:

This was recorded in London, December 1958, when John Williams was 17 years of age (except for Cavatina, which was actually recorded later, in 1978 for the original score of "The Deer Hunter").

Excellent album of classical guitar.

It is hard to praise a CD like this hard enough. Marriner conducts these pieces superbly. As a flautist myself, I regard this performance as musical golddust. The performance is technically exquisite and Neville Marriner conducts very well. This is great value for money and I'd fullt recommend buying it.

This is a marvellous disc of 24 of Abel's pieces for solo viola da gamba. When it first arrived I took it into the living room after supper to enjoy with a glass of wine and a book. The book never got a look in. I was instantly spellbound by the music. Abel was a pupil of Bach and the great man's influence shows in places - the two pieces marked "Arpeggio" perhaps have echoes of the preludes to the first and third Cello Suites, for example and the Allegro WKO198 could be a concluding gigue . Now, Abel is no Bach, and these are no Cello Suites, but there is serious and involving melodic and harmonic invention here and a truly delightful sense that these are semi-improvised miniatures played for friends around the fire - which apparently is exactly where ... The Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs has Thibaudet's sets of the complete Debussy solo piano music at the top of the digital recordings, and this is certainly high quality.

We have several recordings of the Preludes and some other works, but there is nothing to come close to Thibaudet for great performances and superior recording quality.

The liner notes are very helpful, and in the first set you get different articles in English, French, German and Italian. Great if you are multilingual, but only of marginal interest to me. The second set has one article and translations, not separate articles.

Well worth purchasing.

Finzi's Cello Concerto and the concertante works on this disc show another side to a composer best know for his string works, miniatures, choral writing and songs. This is not to forget the sublime clarinet concerto, but these works are somewhat more rugged.
The cello concerto was Finzi's last completed work, and the last one he heard (in radio broadcast)on his hospital bed as lay dying of cancer. The work was completed in adversity and hence is less concerned with the pastoral idyll and more with the struggle of life over death.
To do this work justice you therefore have to put aside the preconceived view of Finzi as the pastoralist and come up with a grittier sound, especially in the declamatory and anguished first movement. Unfortunately the playing ... Read More:
