I've owned sets of these concertos for 30 years, and this one for about 10. They are a constant and unfailing delight, and Simon Preston's performance is very very good.

There's certainly nothing overblown about Andrew Manze's style of playing. The best known of these sonatas by Handel is the Sonata in D Opus 1 No 13 which opens the recording. To some ears, Manze's tone might be too cool and spare - in the opening measures particularly. To my mind, the sound he creates is perfectly suited to the demands of these small-scale, occasional chamber pieces of the early C18.

As Manze's illuminating essay that accompanies the CD makes clear, only five of the eight complete sonatas on the disc are now thought to be authentically Handel. The others were probably passed off as Handel by unscrupulous publishing houses cashing in on a big name. It might be seen, therefore, as a wonderful opportunity to play ... Read More:

Much more 'classical' than his earlier work. No memorable 'songs' as such but great hip easy listening for your next dinner party

What happens in this Beethoven Cycle is a measure of one of the greatest features of Andras Schiff's playing. He thinks through the music (see the download page on Guardian Unlimited page for his analyses) and arrives at an interpretation that both combines intellectual rigour, emotive insight and profound pianistic fluidity.

The narrative trajectory of the sonatas is key and, like the Well Tempered Clavier, Schiff has opened up this cycle for me.

Thoroughly recommended.

There must be something wrong with my ears. I have heard John Adams's wildly popular Violin Concerto numerous times, and it has already been recorded at least three other times. But I hear little in it that appeals to me; it does not touch me at all emotionally. I can admire the skill and the complexity of the writing, but for me it doesn't really add up to much. That said, Chloë Hanslip does a bang-up job of playing it and if you already know this piece and want a recording of it you could certainly do worse, particularly when you consider its budget price. Hanslip's playing may not be quite as intense as that of Gidon Kremer on the first recording of the work or that of Robert McDuffie on Telarc, but it comes a close second. Her tone is a ... There is no finer recording of Rachmaninov 3. Whilst I greatly enjoy listening to the more poetic/refined performances by the likes of Ashkenazy, if you want to hear this piece played with the most barn-storming virtuosity and dramtic effect by arguably the greatest living pianist, then this has to be the recording for you. Ignore the occasional coughs from the audience, or one or two slips by Argerich in the cadenza- this is a crackling live performance, the perfect synthesis of supreme pianism and muscical intellect. Some of Argerich's pyrotechnics would surely leave even the great Rachmaninov himself awestruck (listen to the pace at which she takes the finale's opening!). Contrast this to the sensuousness of her playing on the piano's entry ... Read More:

Chopin is to classical music what the Beatles are in popmusic: everyone will play them at some point in their career. With Chopin, there are hardly any performers left who did NOT play anything of him. In City jargon: Chopin is a benchmark for your abilities as a pianist. His music leaves an enormous space for interpretations. His Nocturnes rank among the more difficult Chopin pieces in terms of interpretation.

So, how does Mr. Barenboim tackle this? First, he's a too good pianist to fall into trap over overplaying it. His interpretation is slightly constrained, and none to fluid. After hearing them repeatedly, it seems he's a little careless, not too much interested, perhaps a little obnoxious?. Mmm, this sounds a bit too far for a ... Read More:

This version of Beethoven's extraordinary set of 5 cello and piano sonatas has been rightly praised. Brendel father and son play beautifully, in total harmony. It must be so rewarding for a father to be able to play these eternally youthful masterpieces with his son. The recording is excellent and the tone of the instruments just lovely. I did feel occasionally I needed this extra bit of momentum, the hell for leather quality that Richter and Rostropovich bring to these works, but these are admirable performances. It annoyed me a bit that the sonatas are not in their Opus number sequence, but the sets of variations are just wonderful. I have to admit that when Beethoven brings his own extraordinary twist to Papageno's tune from the Magic Flute in the ... Read More:

In my opinion this set is hard to beat - and the quality vs price ratio is huge! I have seen Donohoe perform live (Rachmaninov 24 preludes in Manchester) so I bought this CD on the back of his concert. It was a revelation because I had only heard Tchaikovsky's no1 up to that point, but I actually found that No2 became my favourite. It's superb! Inclusion of the No3 and the Fantasy are also bonuses not to be missed. A very generous set all-round.
