This version of Beethoven's extraordinary set of 5 cello and piano sonatas has been rightly praised. Brendel father and son play beautifully, in total harmony. It must be so rewarding for a father to be able to play these eternally youthful masterpieces with his son. The recording is excellent and the tone of the instruments just lovely. I did feel occasionally I needed this extra bit of momentum, the hell for leather quality that Richter and Rostropovich bring to these works, but these are admirable performances. It annoyed me a bit that the sonatas are not in their Opus number sequence, but the sets of variations are just wonderful. In my opinion this set is hard to beat - and the quality vs price ratio is huge! I have seen Donohoe perform live (Rachmaninov 24 preludes in Manchester) so I bought this CD on the back of his concert. It was a revelation because I had only heard Tchaikovsky's no1 up to that point, but I actually found that No2 became my favourite. It's superb! Inclusion of the No3 and the Fantasy are also bonuses not to be missed. A very generous set all-round.

Wow. As a Rachmaninov fan this is a must have. Ashkenazy is superb and this won't dissapoint. The concerti are of course fabulous and this recording is one of THE best. The various solo piano work are great, but prehaps best of all is the Sonata in B flat minor...this CD collection is a steal and you will get such enjoyment out of it.

Nicola Benedetti is a mature and accomplished violinist at a very young age. It takes courage to present a programme like this - the hugely often-recorded Mendelssohn Concerto, two little Mozart pieces that require the art which conceals art, some ersatz Schubert and an uncompromising Macmillan contribution. What it does seem to say is that it is her CD, not some kind of marketing exercise or 'themed' or 'concept' programme, but the music she wanted to do at this particular point, and that's good. It is all most compelling, too. The Mendelssohn is entirely without frills, no fancy insights, just straight, in tune, very poised, well controlled and honest. At last I discovered that the mystery pianist was Tamas Vasary, in a recording he made in the 1960's and available once again as part of this freshly-released, 3-CD box set. The Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs has Thibaudet's sets of the complete Debussy solo piano music at the top of the digital recordings, and this is certainly high quality. We have several recordings of the Preludes and some other works, but there is nothing to come close to Thibaudet for great performances and superior recording quality. The liner notes are very helpful, and in the first set you get different articles in English, French, German and Italian. Great if you are multilingual, but only of marginal interest to me. The second set has one article and translations, not separate articles. Well worth purchasing.
