This version of the Brahms Concerto has just received very honorable mention on BBC3's 'CD Review', as a personal favourite of the reviewer. It dates from the 1950s but still sounds well, and it captures Milstein's approach to this Concerto a little better than the later version for DGG with Eugen Jochum, though both Steinberg and Jochum provide outstanding accompaniment - yet Milstein is on better form here. The Beethoven is equally good, and at its very modest price this is a CD of quite outstanding accounts of the two greatest violin Concerti - you can't go wrong.

Sorry, but I have to say that I found this album disappointing and `wanting' in giving it a score of 3 I felt I was been overly generous. Over the years many artists have been fortunate enough to get a gold or platinum award that is however not to say that it was as deserving as one would expect. Of course everyone's tastes are different, but having seen his work on the Sky Classical channel I purchased the album, it didn't though live up to my expectations.

Like Sue, I believe Exodus is one of those tracks that have stood the test of time and if I were to choose one track from Maksim's album it would be Exodus and his rendition is not that bad, unfortunately though it cannot salvage the remainder of the album.

This CD is ridiculously good value.

Hill plays these works with supreme sensitivity and fluidity. In particular, his reading of the Berg sonata is glorious, as is his take on the Webern Variations; Hill's performance of the latter captures the magic of the piece so well that Webern's fractured melodic lines seem entirely natural and lyrical. I've played (and occasionally performed) the Variations on and off for years, and familiarity has never bred contempt - but this recording has shone some new light into a few uninvestigated corners.

Dazzling.

Before this CD was produced in 1994 Scharwenka and Sauer were two names unheard of by most Classical music fans. Despite the awards this CD gained, and recordings of other works by them since they remain largely unknown. On the strength of these two works they deserve a wider hearing, and these two concertos deserve to be played in our major concert halls.

Both composers were hailed as composer pianists in their lifetimes. Scharwenka's Concerto No 4 from 1910 is the more innovative. At 40 minutes long with an 18 minute first movement it is a big beast. The virtuosity displayed ranks with the best of Rachmaninov, whilst in style the music is more adventurous, rather as with early Prokofiev there is the sound of late romantic music being ... This CD is like a plateful of oysters; delightfully light yet deeply satisfying. Much of Haydn's music conveys a sense of the joy of living, and this disc has it in spades. Hamelin's effortless, filigree-like control of the composer's characterisitc spangle of notes is astonishing, all beautifully captured by a recording of demonstration quality.

I became an admirer of Hamelin having acquired his recording of Brahm's Piano Quartets. His mastery of both composers' music is simply dazzling.

The cello and piano sonatas are among Beethoven's most lively, melodious and inventive pieces. All five sonatas but especially the earlier three find the master in heroic mood, captured brilliantly by the two great Russians in these recordings. They reach great depths of emotion in the Adagio of the last sonata, one of the most moving pieces composed by Beethoven. I have heard many versions of these works, but in spite of some slightly recessed recording, these ones have given me unalloyed pleasure since I first encountered them on LP. Rostropovich huge tone is admirably balanced by Richter highly sensitive and even delicate pianism. For a man with huge hands and even bigger musical personality, the intimacy that he brings to the quieter movements is ... Read More:
