Don't let anyone put you off this exquisite recording. This is my favourite piece of music and I love this rendition. It is a powerful evocation of the spirit of Beethoven and I am cirtain he would appreciate the skill with which it is played. Why he might cry so emotionaly engaging is the performance. Filled with subtle feminine nuances of phrasing and expression in the solo part, none of which is unsupported by the conductor and orchestra, it is very well rehearsed. It is a uniquely personal reading yet quintessentialy Beethovian, in point of fact I would say she get's more Beethoven out of the piece than we have any right to expect! We should never fail to appreciate the feminine finesse and dexterity of Anne-Sophie Mutter's pacing and dynamic ... Read More:

Karen Geoghegan has well and truly brought the bassoon out of the shadows of the orchestral ranks to record a fantastic debut album. It has it all - fireworks, beautiful singing tone, fabulous control with great attention to detail.

Karen has been able to give her bassoon-playing a quality that at times sounds with the richness of a trombone, at other times with a tone like a saxaphone or clarinet. With such versatility it is wonder we are not all more familiar with the instrument and its repertoire.

The Opera North Orchestra and Benjamin Wallfisch have worked together to provide a sensitive backdrop to this outstanding performer.

I very much hope Chandos will be encouraged to ask this star performer to share ... Read More:

In my review of Volume One of this cycle of recordings, I mentioned how I was looking forward to hearing Nigel North's interpretation of 'Sir John Langton's Pavan'. Well, I didn't have to wait long for it: it's here on Volume Two. The disc opens with Dowland's most famous piece: the Lachrymae Pavan. I have perhaps a dozen versions of this piece on recordings of various sorts. This one is, in my opinion, without doubt the finest of them all. The elaborate repeats of each section ('divisions') are so often treated merely as a showcase for the lutenist's dexterity. Nigel North, while every bit as 'dextrous', concentrates on serving the music's integrity so that the spell of the music is not upstaged.

The rest of the record maintains this wonderful ... Read More:

Nothing Murray Perahia does is ever bad. In this case the performance of the Schubert is magical. I heard it in the car on the way to work and was captivated - a dangerous driver for a while. If you like Schubert and Perahia this is a must-buy recording. The sound is slightly old and the audience noise is not ideal, but when the music grabs you then you no longer notice these slight snags. The Mozart is well worth having too, but not in quite the same, unmissable, class as the Schubert.

The concerto is very appealing and full of melodic grace, while wistful in its sonorities. It's beautifully performed here. Why is such a lovely piece not better known - i.e not performed more often? One would have thought there are soloists out there crying out to give it a go, especially when the inspiration is so consistently high. It's not glitzy or virtuosic, just expertly written, memorable and satisfying. Bruch wrote much more than that pesky G minor violin concerto. Try the second symphony on Phillips, conducted by Masur: sonorous, Brahmsian stuff (without the long-windedness!)

I found the previous Dutton release of York Bowen's Violin Concerto and Piano Concerto very satisfying, and commented at the time that we ought to hear Bowen's other Piano concertos: we've one more to go, but these two for the next instalment are equally worthwhile.(The third and fourth are also available on Hyperion, I believe).

Both the second and third concertos are more compact works than their earlier sibling, but both pack a decent punch. We are not short-changed by their concision: on the contrary, not a note is wasted and the melodic material is memorable and creates a perfect balance between soloist and orchestra (due, perhaps in no small part to Bowen's own skills as a soloist). Michael Dussek once again proves an ideal pianist.

I was recommended this set by one of the world's leading authorities on Messiaen whose own recordings are considered (and are) 'benchmark'. That is surely the strongest recommendation! So...

I bought this as a present to myself (and with just reason) as a memory of something extra special. It is truly wonderful to hear all those glorious sounds and colours, the power and glory of this great music in such resplendent sound and recording. However good other recordings may be, this is superlative in all respects.

Composers, organists, Messiaen fans, whoever, just go and treat yourselves!

Understated, underrated.

Understated is one thing, underrated is another.

In fact, it's a masterly selection. Why doesn't it have more reviews? Why isn't it top of the pops? Oh, I see. Not good Enough for the Great British Public. Silly of me not to realise.

A rich range, containing Home and Away, Sea and Empire, war and love, history. Should be a compulsory part of the National Curriculum. Bet there's plenty of stuff they could ditch that covers the same ground [or less] much more boringly.

The music shows the man: one who knew his country and loved it.

I didn't know the English had so many good songs. I knew they had a few, but thought the Celts were the only ones in these islands to have more ... Read More:
