Glass's violin concerto is pleasant and immediately accessible. But, Glass's music is all very similar; its as if there is a number of ideas which get continously re-cycled. To my mind, Adams' concerto is stronger

Well-judged tempi, good recording, the scholarship you'd expect from Mr Hurford, allied to imaginatively chosen registration. The C Minor Passacaglia & Fugue are particularly good - I've been looking for a sensitive recording of this for ages after dismissing a lot of ponderous versions which start off with the big guns already blazing!

In my opinion it is very difficult to identify one version of a work as great as this . Different interpretations can tell you so much more about a work .

That said this marvellous recording from the early 1980s was my introduction to a 25 year long love affair with this piece . Perlman spins tone of gold whilst also allowing introspection in the slow movement .

That said I wouldn't be without Menuhin/Furtwangler on Testament, Oistrakh/Cluytens on EMI or Hilary Hahn on Sony either

This is a good collection of music by Johann Sebastian Bach. Half of the album consists of his cello suites, being transcribed by Segovia for guitarist John Williams (not to be confused with John Williams the American composer of film music), and the remainder is an assortment of transcriptions, again by Segovia, from other instruments including the violin partitas (spelt incorrectly as `paritia' on the track list) and lute suites.

All the works are lively and happy pieces - the terms such as allemande, courante, sarabande, minuetto, gigue, bouree, gavotte and chaconne have Italian and French origins and are used to describe the rhythm of dance orientated music themes.

Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia, born 1893, is ... Read More:

The reviewer above is spot-on in his assessment of this set. Lewis' virtuosity allows him to sound spontaneous, secure and sensitive at the same time. He presents Beethoven as a much more agreeable character than we are used to when listening to more extreme interpreters such as Kovacevich or Pollini.

The flipside of the human Beethoven is that the frenzy that can be created in the Hammerklavier (one of the previous volumes) or the last movement of Op 111 is replaced by a range of more down-to-earth emotions. Lewis' Beethoven doesn't do jazz. It's different, but extremely impressive nonetheless. And in further agreement with the other reviewer: the ending of Op111 is pure magic...

As the previous reviewers have quite comprehensively applauded this group of recordings I am not here to add yet another review along the same lines. True, these recordings are fantastic heard through speakers on your pc or cd player. However. If you intend to convert this music to play onto an mp3 player as I have be warned. There is an unfortunate problem when listening to this through headphones that does not exist when simply listening to it on a cd player. You can actually hear the pianists laboured breathing while playing. This for me atleast ruins the music. I simply cannot concentrate on the music while listening to this. It is not unlike having someone breathing over your shoulder.

So. By all means listen to this through your cd players ... Read More:

28.The Art Of Violin [2001] starring: Georges Enesco, Ivry Gitlis, Ida Haendel, Hilary Hahn, Jascha Heifetz

Music : The Art Of Violin [2001]
I could write a very long and detailed review of these DVDs, listing the amazing segments of archive footage of the very great players represented here. There are some particular highlights, but suffice to say that everything is worth seeing, the commentary, with the excellent contributions from concert virtuosi, in particular the very engaging Ivry Gitlis, fiddle on lap ready as a tool to demonstrate what he says, are wonderful, and it's hard to imagine that this kind of historical survey of violin playing could be better done. The story is triumphant in places - Heifetz, Milstein (some amusing informal footage here), Kreisler, Francescatti doing a wonderful 'Ronde des Lutins' and talking engagingly about his love of gardining - wistful (Ferras) or even tragic (Rabin) in others, ... I currently own recordings of the Bach cello suites by Rostropovich, Casals, Yo-Yo Ma and Fournier and have heard many others. Tortelier's recording is my firm favourite. The pace is just right; slow enough to express feeling, but fast enough to realise the no doubt intended flow to the pieces. Tortelier is completely at one with the Bach Cello Suites in these recordings, and plays them beautifully. Highly recommended.

Just to confirm the other reviewer to date's analysis, this music is superb and NN brings out a vast range of emotions from a single instrument. In my view the best introduction to JOhn Dowland's music.
