The first surprising thing about this set is the fact that debussy only wrote this relatively small amount of solo piano music. The second is that so few of these are what one might call "famous".

Yes, there's good old Flaxen Hair and Arabesque and Golliwog's Cake Walk, and so on ... but you also get a host of utterly surreal and enchanting pieces such as his Estampes and Images.

Playing the whole set through from start to finish is a suitably intense way to penetrate Debussy's unusual mind, as each piece is completely different from all the others.

The quality of playing is superb, as the pianist seems to have captured something of the period and situation in which they were written - an admirable achievement.

I love the Goldbergs, but never really heard them (and that includes the incomparable Gould) until I heard this. You will never tire of it. One problem: you cannot ignore it when it's on, so don't plan to listen while doing anything else!

I don't think this marvellous 8CD set by Mitsuko Uchida and the ECO can be bettered. It is not quite a complete recording of all the piano concerti, but incorporates all of the concerti on the four double CDs issued under the Philips Duo label. Only a few of the very early concerti are missing (nos. 1-4, 7 and 10 to be precise) and all the great ones are here.

I have enthused about Uchida's Complete Mozart Piano Sonatas Mozart: The Piano Sonatas and about the Concerti issued as Duo discs. Uchida has a real empathy with Mozart, I think, and you get the sense of love and joy in the music combined with magnificent musicianship making this a marvellous set and outstanding value. She is crisp and sensitive in the quicker outer movements ... Read More:

The cello is one of the greatest instruments in the string family of instruments and adagio is a slow movement in a piece of music. This is a 2 Cd compilation of the slow movements of some of the greatest orchestral works for the cello by various artists. From the uplifting sounds of the Swan (Saint-Saëns) played by Lynn Harrell to the haunting sounds of Kol Nidrei (Bruch) played by Julian Lloyd Weber (two of the greatest cellists of our time), the music on these Cds are some of the best uplifting, relaxing and enriching pieces of music ever written for the cello. For sheer quality of the recording and artistic performance, this 2cd set is a bargain. I highly recommend.

Mitsuko Uchida is not my kind of pianist, once very disappointed by her wishywashy rendition of Debussy's 12 etudes, but when she plays Mozart, few pianists can match. This set includes all of my favourite Mozart concertos and is sheer bliss to your ears from begining to end, filled with magical moments and noble poise.

Check out A.Rubinstein's RCA 2 disc set as well, quite a contrast to Uchida and Perahia's style but outstanding in its own right.

If you want an honest, straigtforward yet beautifully played account of these lovely works then you won't go far wrong with this set. And such good value for money too!

Barenboim's legendary cycle recorded in the 1960's and 70's, both soloist and conducting the English Chamber orchestra. Which was, and still is, a superb Mozart orchestra. And Barenboim being one of the best exponents of Mozart and Beethoven I've heard.

Barenboim never rushes these works. Giving breadth, structure and feeling to all of them. Infact he slows right down in some of the slow movements. (I love the very slow tempo of second movement of PC No.21 for example).

Recordings are clear and honest. With good balance between Orchestra and Soloist. ... Read More:

58.Scott Joplin: Piano Rags [IMPORT] from: Nonesuch

Music : Scott Joplin: Piano Rags [IMPORT]
I only really knew the Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag before I heard this album. I must say that it has opened my eyes to the most wonderful music. I think Gladiolus Rag is the most beautiful rag I have ever heard and Rifkin plays at a beautiful tempo. He also plays Paragon Rag and Fig Leaf Rag beautifully.

In fact, I felt I had to learn to play the piano after hearing this album and I was determined to learn to play Gladiolus. I have been having lessons for one year, and practising one hour each day, and am pleased to say that I can play the first half of quite a few of them!! That's at 46 and never ever previously having played a note on any instrument.

You never know this album might inspire you the same way!

Whether you are primarily interested in the concerto or not this is a beautiful addition to any collection. The recording and playing is wonderful. The Scottish Fantasia might be regarded as the lesser piece but is my favourite. I have played it many times whilst visiting Scotland and sitting beside the river Gary immersed in the beauty of the music and the place. I highly recommend both.

Bach's works for solo violin, the three sonatas of four movements each and three partitas of six dance-style movements each, were completed in 1720 during Bach's employment at Kothen at a time when his writing was at its most prolific - the Brandenburg concertos, double violin concertos and cello suites all originated from this period.

Bach himself transcribed parts of the work for other instruments (including organ, lute, and harpsichord) and is included in two cantatas (BWV 29 and BWV 120a). The works in their entirety have also been transcribed and rearranged by many artists and composers for guitar, viola, cello and piano.

Arthur Grumiaux, born in Belgium 1921 (died 1986) was a much acclaimed violinist, more highly regarded by his fellow ... Read More:
