The big album of 1973, Bowie (or at least his Mainman production team) was coining it in. No surprise; he embraced the guitar driven rock of the glam era and lead from the front, possibly for the only time in his career.
In pure visual terms, the Bowie "look" was becoming more bizarre. This was glam at the dirty edge, and the album reeks of decadence and too many one night stands. The sounds too, Stones influenced rock, jazz influenced pop, were quite new to those attuned to the Englishness of Kooks and After All. But musically this album showed a new side to Bowie, not perhaps understood at the time.
It shows him taking on board newer sounds, and breaking away from the constraints of the Spiders format. In many ways it was quite ... Read More:

The fact that this is the first review I have been moved to right since I was in school (I'm now 21) demonstrates just how highly I rate this. I'd seriously never really heard of Tom Petty until about 2 months ago, out of curisoity I borrowed it off a friends Dad and was blown away at how awesome this stuff is. Easily the best double album I own as there is literally not a bad track, the only time I reach for the skip button is when I don't have time to listen to the whole thing and find myself being drawn to some tracks that I just have to listen to!!

Favourite tracks: 1,4,6,9,10,17,21,26,30,31,33 But 'Two Gunslingers' would have to be my favourite track, if I had to pick one.

The only problems are: On 2 discs which as a rule ... Read More:

There are some people who come into your life in whatever fashion and change it utterly. Dylan more than anyone else through his own search for who, what and where he was going and also in musical terms formed an articulate voice for our inarticulate postwar generation. He throughout his search through the musical lexicon hall of fame including such luminaries as Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly and Cisco Houston injected a large dose of adrenalin into our teenage angst and we started to recognise what kind of world we were living in and and that we wanted to and how to change it.From thinking that in the words of one politician "we had never had it so good "we started realising how bad it was and and an inkling of how bad it was going to get.Dylan's songs and ... Forget heavy metal and led zepplin - Jeff has more balls in his little finger than all all the 'great' guitar players except than perhaps Jimi himself. Pure testosterone. The perfect driving music - no speed limit.

Jeff can change from thumping rock distortion to beautiful haunting bends and swoops - in pitch perfect highs and lows. Not to go through the tracks one by one - but this is Jeff hitting a high he has hinted at all his career. Never one to copy old riffs and cliches - he has been a unique talent ever since he picked up a 6 string. It's a change to see an artist not go down the commercial route just for the money.. No Frog Songs or Wonderful Tonights - just great guitar.

'Face To Face' is sometimes acknowledged as a Kinks classic yet i believe overall it's a rather average album which is well below the standards set by the Kinks contempories (for example The Beatles, Stones, Bob Dylan) in that same time period (1966) both in songwriting, use of instumentation and production. However, there are indications on a number of tracks that the Kinks were really advancing lyrically and occasionally musically with a sustained english flavour to many of their songs in addition to an occasional use of unusual instruments like the harpsicord.
'Rosie Won't You Please Come Home' is an autobiographical song which relates to Ray and Dave's sister's emigration to Australia and has some aristocratic references alongside some inspired use of the harpsicord and ... Read More:

I expected to find three well-know vintage hits here and little else. But a week on and I'm still playing it constantly and still putting down whatever I'm doing to give it my undivided attention. Which is surprising as this was never quite my kind of music. There's stuff here I doubt I'll ever really get to like (such as the later singles on disc 1 where the B sides tend to be better). But there's also much that seriously grows on you. What was good becomes great and the best is outstanding.

Good as disc 1 (I especially like the first two singles, the intrumentals and Come On Children) disc 2 is really where it's at, dominated as it must be by the peerless Itchycoo Park, Tin Soldier (how come I never heard this before? What an intro!) and Lazy Sunday. It's easy see why some critics looked ... Read More:

LOTC was my intitation into the world of Joni Mitchell. Fourteen years old, with romantic notions about Woodstock as it approached the twentieth anniversary, I searched out the cassette to hear what Graham Nash had described.

The "Woodstock" anthem was the catalyst for LOTC success, but it is by no means the only, or even best, tune this effort offers. "Morning Morgantown" sets the scene for a recording that basically takes the listener through a pastoral panorama. Along the way are some observations about the intrusion of art meets commerce ( "For Free"), manipulative triangles ( " Conversation"), Gender roles ( the stunning " Arrangement"), and spiritual quest ( " The Priest"). Of course, another career launcher, " Big Yellow Taxi", graces this album, as well as Mitchell's camp classic " The Circle ... Read More:

Depend who this is supposed to be essential do-the newcomer to the Urban blues which influenced the British blues bands or essential as the biggest songs are here.Big via other people not especially Muddy who I don't think troubled the pop charts.
Which is besides the point-the pop charts are only a mirror to public taste.
In the U K Muddy waters was represnted in the 50s by a solitary EP which retailed at the same price as Cliff Richard or Elvis so it died a death and was only there because Decca were licensing product from Chess having only just obttained the catalog.
Muddy Waters was also a very unlikely artist to aim his music at the charts for the simple reason that while he may have introduced Chuck Berry to Chess he was not aiming his music at teenagers like Berry but doing his own thing like Bo Diddley.Berry ... Read More:

A gorgeous album when it first appeared now enhanced with bonus tracks. This is the Kinks at their most thoughtful.
