worth owning just for the 2x versions of "hear my train a comin..", let alone "born under a bad sign" or anything else on here..
the man was an alien, either that or the rest of us are such pathetic examples of human beings that no-one has been able to reach his heights since. and to think some people rate Bono.
woah..
just buy it.

Vladimir Ashkenazy must rank as one of the greatest pianists of the modern era. His blend of flawless technique and sensitive interpretation marks him out as being uniquely placed to deliver as near to definitive performances as it is possible to get. This set of piano concerti was my introduction to his work, and I remain as impressed now as I was when I first heard them. He is ably supported by a rich and warm sound from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by the incomparable Sir Georg Solti. Ashkenazy was apparently apprehensive about approaching Beethoven and attempting to play him in the West when he emerged from the Soviet Union as a young man in the sixties; he need not have been. His command of the tonal energy and colours of the piano ... Read More:

Steve Earle music is best described as country-rock. The skull and cross bones that form the cover of Copperhead Road album warn of what is to come, a heavy mix of potent music shot through with the reflections of an wild young man who is older than his years. Inserts show a relaxed Earle, fag in mouth, black shades and dressed in denim.

A strong start with 'Copperhead Road' on which you can apparently 'smell the whisky burnin'; 'The Devil's Right Hand' refers to a pistol and though the song has a strange lyrical resonace it isn't until 'Johnny Come Lately' (on which the Pogues play) when the album begins to rock..

'Johnny Come Lately' tells the story of a soldier off to Vietnam who hopes to return to his girl in London and ... Read More:

If you've been enjoying Theme Time Radio Hour then you might want to track down some of the music from the series. Ace have released an excellent authorised double CD package, and when you've bought that one you might want to consider this as a follow-up. There's not quite as good or as wide a musical selection here, presumably due to the selections being made from out of copyright material, but there is still a goodly amount of good music to be enjoyed. Worth having.

'Arthur' was originally conceived as a musical television drama, but when the drama never materialised, Ray Davies went ahead and released the music in the form of a concept album. The basic story relates to Ray's brother-in-law Arthur who emigrated to Australia some years previously.
Generally, the music here has a much more 'modern' feel than previous Kinks albums, mainly due to its very rich production and the typical Kinks sound augumented by horns. In many ways 'Arthur' is much more suited to the ideals normally associated with concept albums than 'The Village Green Preservation Society' because it does seem to be much grander in scope.
The songs are generally strong despite the fact that 'Victoria', 'Shangrila' and 'Australia' tend ... Read More:

This is an absolutely essential purchase for anyone that calls themselves a fan of Bob Dylan. Be really smart though, and wait till you can get it for under a tenner, like I did. Not that it's not worth full price - it is; but you can feel even more smug when you've got it for a bargain price.

Enough of my smugness! What about the product?

This collection of rare Dylan recordings (outtakes, live recordings and such) have been packaged on 3 CDs, and ordered more or less chronologically. CD 1 covers a period of just over 2 years from late 1961 (beginning with a brave performance from before the release of Dylan's first album in which he pretty much verbally destroys New York in front of a New York audience - "Hard Times in New York ... THE best Springsteen record. For starters its' got Atlantic City my favourite song by the boss. This is quite a dark album and the stripped down man with guitar, harmonica and great voice really fits. The album is mostly quite slow but does pick up pace at times (like the brilliant Johnny 99). Flows perfectly track to track and the songs on this album are great. Add to your collection. You won't regret it.

This album is truly incredible. Beginning with the excellent wake-up call that is 'Deadwing' and then continuing with some of the best songs that Porcupine Tree have done in recent years, 'Arriving Somewhere... But Not Here', 'Open Car', 'Mellotron Scratch' etc..

The most interesting thing, I find, about this album is that Steven Wilson seems to have finally allowed some influence from one of his supposed favourite bands, the progressive thrash metal band Meshuggah, to creep into his music. The Heavy riff in 'Arriving Somewhere... But Not Here' is one of the best parts of the album and works incredibly in contrast with the quieter parts of the song.

My personal favourite part of the album is the guest solo by Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth ... Read More:

Theres no doubting the quality of most of these songs..though a longer cd would have been more fitting. Smoe ommsions are apparent..tracks like Family man,Isnt it midnight,Beautiful child and a couple of others should have been included. Unfortunately apart from the brilliant Gypsy..the cd has 2 awful tracks from the average mirage album which spoil a good set. The 2 new songs are ok though not amazing. If you are new to FM then this is a good intro to the band as alot of the hits are here. Also check out there excellent comeback album 2003's Say you will which is excellent.

I expected to find three well-know vintage hits here and little else. But a week on and I'm still playing it constantly and still putting down whatever I'm doing to give it my undivided attention. Which is surprising as this was never quite my kind of music. There's stuff here I doubt I'll ever really get to like (such as the later singles on disc 1 where the B sides tend to be better). But there's also much that seriously grows on you. What was good becomes great and the best is outstanding.

Good as disc 1 (I especially like the first two singles, the intrumentals and Come On Children) disc 2 is really where it's at, dominated as it must be by the peerless Itchycoo Park, Tin Soldier (how come I never heard this before? What an intro!) and Lazy Sunday. It's easy see ... Read More:
