Although Dylan sang protest songs on his previous album, 'the freewheelin'', I think this is his only complete protest album. He sings of wars ('with god on our side'), murders ('The ballad of Hollis Brown', 'The lonesome death of Hattie Carroll'), racism ('a pawn in their game') the closure of a mine ('north country blues'), and criticism of the way countries are run (the title song and 'when the ship comes in') as the main subject matter, with a few more reflective ballads ('too many mornings', 'spanish boots of spanish leather', 'restless farewell') sandwiched in to help add a bit of variety. I prefer the slightly less serious 'another side' and 'the freewheelin'' to this, but it is an excellent selection of songs that really makes you think ... Read More:

With their 3rd Album Yes made some changes, and boy did they pay off. This album is one of the most important albums in the Genre, not just for introducing the world to a one of the greatest ever guitarist; Steve Howe; but it is also important for its fantastic and quirky music.
This album contains some fine, fiiine music like the famous 'Your Move/All Good People,' and 'Yours Is No Disgrace,' not to mention the immortal 'Starship Trooper,' the album is of such high quality that basically no Yes concert has been played since without at least 70% of the songs from this album being played.
An Utter Classic. Get it right now!

worth owning just for the 2x versions of "hear my train a comin..", let alone "born under a bad sign" or anything else on here..
the man was an alien, either that or the rest of us are such pathetic examples of human beings that no-one has been able to reach his heights since. and to think some people rate Bono.
woah..
just buy it.

Music : The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
I guess there's always one that bucks the trend! I was disappointed but only really because some of the reviews i've read led me to believe this was a masterpiece which really it aint. Double albums almost always have fillers - in this case a few too many twiddly instrumental interludes and a few tracks that just sound like outtakes - better production would have improved them. The best tracks, however, are sublime and there are about 12 of those which together would have made a great 5 star album. The lyrics are great, bit clever to nick from other artists (its only rock n roll!)but they nicked from the best(and i still like it!) but 'pound' and 'trick' are better.....

Many U2 fans and reviewers here seem to think that Achtung Baby is their best album. I disagree. Actually I think it is one of their dullest. Apart from the fabulous "One", "Ultraviolet" and "Love is Blindness", the other songs are fairly bland. You could pretty much swap music or lyrics between any of them and not notice the difference. "Zooropa" has more energy and range in this genre, and all their early albums are miles better. I'd even say "Pop" has a better mix of material. I don't know why but, apart from the three songs mentioned, this album fails to move me - unlike most of U2'sother albums.

Another slab of brilliance from Ray, Dave Davies and co. The paradoxical and contradictory nature of mankind has never been written about better (by any philosopher or intellectual heavyweight) or understood (as much as it is possible to do)more so, than Ray Davies. The very nature of this album is contradictory and i'm sure the irony of this has not been lost on Mr Davies himself. It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world............indeed it is. Buy and cherish this.Genius.

I will probably buy this because of the presentation and to ensure that my Pink Floyd collection remains complete in every permutation of packaging and mixing. Discussion of every track here is unnecessary, the band can safely rest on its laurels as the most innovative, talented and successful act ever of its genre.
On the debit side there are questions as always - when is some new material going to be released and when are they going to perform live again ?

Even though i was born twenty years after this was made, it defined an era for me, roughly from the ages of 19 to 23 (he wasnt much older when he made this), that age when you just finish with being a teenager and start trying to be less flippant, for most anyway, for me it was the time for first relationships, i was a late starter. But this album was me, mine, it is for me, still is. While others my age were listening to Tatu and Sclub and prodigy, i'd found Bob.

Tracks that stand out - Subterranean Homesick Blues. Maggie's Farm. Mr Tambourine man. It's Alright Ma. She Belongs to Me (One of my favourite songs). Gates Of Eden. Love Minus Zero.

Just.. run and get it before the bogey man gets you. And dont forget to listen to it a couple of times, cus it ... Read More:

If you like Genesis and have done for a while, you will be used to the fact that they are not, and probably never were trendy. The advantage of this is that they never go out of fashion, and I still enjoy listening to this album after 30 years of knowing it.The first album after Peter Gabriel left sees Phil Collins step forward from the drums to lead vocal, and he makes a superb job of it. All the songs are good, some are great, there are no duds. The playing by all four members of the group is excellent, and makes me wish Steve Hackett had never left, as his guitar contributions add an 'other worldly' air to many songs. The stand out tunes for me are 'squonk', 'mad man moon' and 'ripples', but all of them are classics.Genesis at their original and best.

Nothing special or exciting here, a run of the mill three star album. Even the better tracks seem a bit jaded with time. Great blues from the band that toured this stuff in the late sixties and I remember them well from a free festival in Hyde Park with Eric Burdon & John Sebastian.

The Blind Owl was a pivotal figure in this band and they never really got it together after his death somehow. His counterpoint was strangely essential. That said, Larry Taylor was arguably one of the best bass players of that time, I'd never seen or heard fretless bass before. A fair enough compilation but no unheard gems or standout tracks here. It'll get played but maybe not too often.
